STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree with experience and training/courses in one or more of the following disciplines: Anthropology, climate services, climate change adaptation.

Experience: At least 5-6 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in both anthropological and climate services expertise. Climate change adaptation will be considered as added advantage

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator, the consultant will be responsible for:

1. Conducting a study to identify barriers to uptake of climate services and find possible solutions

2. Identifying areas of convergence and divergence between climate science and local indigenous knowledge, so that awareness raising, and behaviour change messaging can be developed from areas of convergence. Improving Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable and Food Insecure Populations in Lesotho (IACOV)

3. The study results will inform the development of the 2nd generation country strategic plan on Climate resilience, climate change and early warning for early action.

JOB PURPOSE

To conduct a study on ‘Climate change perceptions and climate information needs study’, on local knowledge, beliefs and understanding of climate patterns and climate change. The study will identify barriers to uptake of climate services and possible solutions; and include detailed community-level needs assessments carried out in the three focus districts (Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing)

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

1. Conduct initial desk-based consultations and research.

(a) Collect and compile detailed community-level needs assessments carried out in the three focus districts (Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing) on climate services.

(b) Review relevant, up-to-date literature on blending indigenous knowledge with scientific knowledge

2. Conduct field work – site visits, consultations, interviews, and focus groups

– to understand how people take decisions related to their livelihoods, and to identify potential entry points to blend indigenous knowledge with scientific knowledge

– facilitate uptake of messaging on how communities can adapt to climatic changes by resorting to growing climate-resilient crops that are also nutrient rich
