ABOUT THE ROLE

Nutrition is prioritized as a core element in WFP’s work and is essential in achieving Zero Hunger and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The objective of this role is to improve the availability of and access to nutritious foods, as well as to analyse and address barriers that communities face in accessing and consuming healthy and nutritious diets. Additionally, supporting the capacity of countries to find long-term solutions and contribute to the broader policy dialogue on food and nutrition security.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Nutritionist P3 positions are found in Headquarters (HQ), Regional Bureaux (RBs) or Country Offices (COs) and report to the Division/Regional/Country Director or the designate.

JOB PURPOSE

To support and/or manage nutrition programmes to contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of beneficiaries within the country and/or provide technical advice and guidance on nutrition strategies, programme design and implementation.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

As a Nutritionist P3, you will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Provide technical and strategic advice to all levels of the organization (HQ, Regional Bureaux and Country Offices) on nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programmes and policy issues. This includes: assessment and analysis, the choice of objectives, activities, transfer modalities and commodity choice all related to nutrition and in line with WFP standards and processes.
  • Support the strengthening of nutrition initiatives, including the development of national government policies related to nutrition (Agriculture, Education, Health, HIV and TB, Resilience, Social protection policies), as well as nutrition strategies, action plans, protocols, programme guidance, implementation modalities and operations in compliance with international guidelines, WFP policies, Executive Board (EB) decisions, and multi-stakeholder platforms guidance such as the SUN Movement.
  • Work in collaboration with senior management, School-based Programmes, Supply Chain, Programme, Cash Based Transfers, Vulnerability Analysis Mapping, Monitoring & Evaluation and other units/ divisions which support WFP Nutrition, to ensure effective advocacy, design and delivery of quality WFP nutrition programming.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness actions, providing technical recommendations on contingency planning, risk analysis and early warning related to nutrition risks, providing response capacity as required.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reporting and learning, contributing to a knowledge base that informs decision making of WFP and other stakeholders.
  • Build capacity of WFP staff, partners and national governments to prepare for and respond to nutrition problems.
  • Support operational partnerships, including inter-agency collaboration, to ensure a strong multi-sectorial response to nutrition in both emergency and non-emergency settings.
  • Represent WFP at national, regional and international meetings to contribute in technical discussions, exchange experiences, advocate for nutrition interventions and identify areas of potential collaboration.
  • Provide guidance and supervisor to junior staff members, acting as a point of referral and support on more complex analysis and queries.
  • Take responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives in all areas of work, to ensure equal participation of women and men.
  • Other duties as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education

You have:

Advanced University degree (recognised by https://www.whed.net/home.php) in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Technology, Medicine or other related fields, or First University degree (recognised by https://www.whed.net/home.php) with additional years of relevant professional level work experience.

Should you not find your university degree in this link kindly note that it will be your responsibility to obtain a formal letter from your Ministry of Education stating their recognition of the university and degree.

Experience

You have:

  • At least 5 years of postgraduate relevant professional level experience in nutrition, public health management, development of projects and/or operational aspects of national, bilateral or multilateral food and nutrition assistance.
  • Experience collaborating with partners to strategically increase the awareness of nutrition policies, strategies and/or programmes.
  • Experience in supporting nutrition programmes in humanitarian and/or development operations, at national and/or international level.

Language

You have:

  • Fluency (level C) in English language.
  • Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) and/or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages).

Mobility

You are able and motivated to work in any of WFP’s Offices throughout the world, including hardship locations. FIT Pool members are expected to agree on the first proposition of deployment that is offered to them.

DESIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

You have some of the following desirable skills:

  • Experience in working in coordination with strategic coordination mechanisms (such as cluster systems, Zero Hunger Challenge, SUN, REACH) at country and/or global level.
  • Experience in providing technical support and capacity building to Government counterparts and other key stakeholders.
  • Experience in writing proposals, analyzing methodologies and data analysis, conducting assessments and operation research, drafting recommendations and preparing high-level reports; all with a specific focus on nutrition.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Building the pool is a comprehensive process and it will take approximately 8 months. The recruitment steps are Online Application + Automatic Screening >Technical Assessment > Profile Screening > Language Test > Panel Interview > Background Verification (the process is subject to change).

If you are selected, you will be placed in the FIT Pool for a period of up to 2 years. You may be contacted as the needs arise for fixed-term international positions with a probationary period of one year in any of the countries in which WFP operates, including hardship duty stations.

Mobility is the essence of WFP and continues to be a core contractual requirement. These positions are rotational which means that you shall be subject to the regular reassignment process to any other location on a period of 2 to 4 years unless the position is reclassified as non-rotational.
