Tunisia is among the first countries in the MENA to establish a national school feeding programme. Just after the country’s independence and following the first reform of the education system in 1958, the school feeding (SF) programme was implemented. The Government’s aim was to ensure that all children, particularly the most vulnerable living in rural areas, received primary education and enhanced their nutrition.
In 2020, the program reached 260,000 school children across 2500 primary schools (25% of children in 50% of primary schools). The programme, fully funded by the government, is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education and is implemented in a highly decentralized manner, where all food procurement and management are done at the school level. The budget of the national school feeding programme doubled in 2019, reaching US$16 million per year. The Tunisian Government also invested US$ 1.7 million in the construction and equipment of a pilot central kitchen and the development of a School Food Bank and started the roll out of this innovative modality.
