Duties and Responsibilities
Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) secretariat’s primary purpose is to support the Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) in his leadership of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) to ensure robust collective humanitarian action. With a focus on field effectiveness, the IASC Secretariat supports the IASC Principals and its subsidiary bodies for coordinated and coherent strategic and operational decision-making, system-wide policies & normative framework, leadership & coordination arrangements, and advocacy. It also facilitates and promotes efficient, effective, field-oriented, and inclusive IASC structures that deliver concretely on the IASC’s vision and priorities. In response to operational challenges, it facilitates agreement on common positions, responses, standards, and guidance, including through the IASC Emergency Directors Group. The IASC secretariat also houses thematic support to OCHA at both policy and operational levels on priority areas including AAP and inclusion. The AAP Team works within the IASC Secretariat and in collaboration with other teams, sections, and branches, to ensure that the humanitarian system is accountable to the people we serve. An accountable humanitarian system is one where decision-making power is in the hands of those affected by crisis. It requires humanitarians to recognise people – women, girls, men, boys of all ages and in all their diversity, as the first responders and active agents in their own relief and recovery. Through AAP, humanitarians aim to ensure that humanitarian action protects and preserves the rights and dignity of people affected by crises, remains relevant and effective, leaves no one behind, and upholds humanitarian principles. Roles and Responsibilities: Within delegated authority, the AAP intern will: • Support the IASB AAP team with all administrative activities related to the work of the IASC Task Force 2, as determined and assigned by their supervisor. • Support the filing and organisation of the team’s shared drive in a rigorous and timely manner. • Be responsible for updating the team’s web-based platform, including liaising with other teams, sections and branches to ensure all relevant information is up to date and verified. • Provide support, as instructed, for knowledge management activities. • Contribute to the preparation of meetings, webinars, workshops, and other events as assigned by their supervisor. • Perform administrative tasks related to the team’s routine activities, including but not limited to notetaking during meetings, updating mailing lists, drafting reports, preparing and/or collating information for various presentations. • Perform other duties as required and as assigned by their supervisor.
Qualifications/special skills
: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Knowladge of information/data management software and website management capacity are assets. Excellent writing and communication skills are required. Experience and skills in coordination, administration and translation are desired.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
