The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund was established in 1949 by the United Nations General Assembly to provide retirement, death, disability, and related benefits for staff of the United Nations and other member organizations of the Fund. The Pension Fund pays benefits in 17 currencies to more than 80,000 beneficiaries who reside in 190 countries, and services more than 140,000 participants who work in the 24 member organizations of the Pension Fund. The Fund has offices in New York (United States) and Geneva (Switzerland) and two liaison offices in Nairobi (Kenya) and Bangkok (Thailand), respectively. The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund-Pension Administration (UNJSPF-PA) comprises about 250 staff from diverse countries and cultures, based across four prominent duty stations (New York, Geneva, Bangkok, and Nairobi). Visit www.unjspf.org for more details. This position is situated within the Accounts Section of Financial Services at the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The Accounts Section oversees pension contributions and benefit overpayments, conducts bank reconciliation, and provides periodic financial reporting. The responsibilities for this position encompass a diverse range of tasks, including maintaining and validating fund accounting operations, addressing inquiries from staff and other UN units, and preparing financial statements and bank reconciliations. The incumbent will report to the Deputy Chief and Chief of the Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Accountant will be responsible for the following duties: • Analyses accounts and reviews/evaluates regular financial reports of UNJSPF, and identifies problem transactions and irregularities in related accounts, resolving them in a timely and effective manner. • Ensures that accurate and complete accounting, reporting and internal control systems are functioning and that all relevant records are maintained. • Assists, prepares or consolidates UNJSPF financial statements to be audited under IPSAS/IFRS. Responds to internal/external audit observations. • Provides advice and guidance concerning the UNJSPF Financial Regulations and Rules and Accounting Instructions. • Provides authoritative interpretation of requirements for handling transactions. • Monitors, analyses, and approves transactions for entry into the accounting system. • Provides supervision and guidance to junior or new accounting staff members. • Defines requirements and works with systems units with respect to production of relevant financial reports. • Participates in the development of accounting policies. • Provides information needed to respond to audit findings. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in business administration, finance, accounting or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA) or equivalent is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in accounting, finance, budgeting and administration is required. A minimum of one (1) year of accounting experience in post-employment benefits plan is required. A minimum of one (1) year’s work experience at a supervisory level is required. Experience in a large ERP system is desirable. Relevant experience in the United Nations system or similar international organization is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
