One of the goals of the High Field Magnet (HFM) Programme at CERN is to explore High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet technology for accelerator applications that go beyond the limits of low-temperature superconductors such as Nb3Sn. The outcomes of the HTS activities are expected to help push the accelerator magnet technology beyond the 16 T threshold. The use of HTS also opens the door for the development of more sustainable particle accelerators with higher operating temperatures.
Part of the bottom-up approach to achieving this goal is the comprehensive characterisation of the state-of-the-art HTS conductors and the development of superconducting cable geometries compatible with both the HTS material and the final application in accelerator magnets.
