Duties and Responsibilities
Background: Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. UNDRR thereby focuses particularly on ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach to disaster risk reduction, in raising awareness and engaging representatives of all relevant stakeholder groups in the strategy discussions. Background and Context: Economic growth and community well-being are directly impacted by disasters. As key members of communities and drivers of growth, private sector companies have an important role to play in reducing disaster risk. With threats to communities and economic livelihoods increasing, the private sector continues to grow its understanding of where to adapt and respond. To drive change and leadership from the business community, the ARISE Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies was started by UNDRR in 2015 as the mechanism to support the private sector to become a key partner in reducing disaster risk. It has grown to over 580 members and 31 networks across the world. As an outcome of the midterm review of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction, there is a need and appetite to increase private sector engagement, strengthen and learn lessons from ARISE and to equip it to effect change in how the private sector invests in a risk-informed sustainable future. The consultancy is focused on support to a number of concrete private sector engagement deliverables required in the third and fourth quarter of 2024. Responsibilities: Reporting to the head of the Partnerships and Stakeholder Engagement Unit and working under the supervision of the Economic Affairs Officer, the consultant will be required to perform the following tasks: 1. Design topical and innovative events for business engagement in DRR though the ARISE Board, Network Leaders, and members (Annual General Meeting) as well as support the preparation, execution, and reporting for these events. 2. Develop an internal database of available tools and trainings related to business resilience. 3. Support the drafting of project proposals on private sector engagement for DRR. 4. Develop calls for contribution and release communication assets to increase visibility of the work by ARISE members not limited to but covering contents from the 2023 ARISE Annual Report 5. Support to the ARISE information and knowledge management, including update of selected variables related to ARISE members/private sector partners, knowledge product inventory (e.g. projects, tools, good practices, case studies, etc.), progress reporting against the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and others as requested. 6. ARISE Review supported through provision of background data and information. 7. Support other partnerships and sector events and other ad hoc meetings/events (e.g. background documents, talking points, presentations, etc. primarily related to private sector engagement for disaster risk reduction). The key deliverables for this consultancy assignment, to be delivered in partnership with the Partnerships Branch of UNDRR, are as follows: • Topical and innovative events for the ARISE Board, Network Leaders, and members (preparation of the Annual General Meeting) by 30 November 2024; • Internal database on tools and training related to business resilience by 31 August 2024; • Contributed to at least 2 drafted partnerships project proposals including on private sector engagement by 31 October 2024; • At least two (quarterly) calls for contribution and one communication asset released per ARISE network that contributed to the 2023 ARISE Annual Report, considering balance across four focus areas of ARISE and types of communication assets by 31 October 2024; • Clean and update at least three variables from the membership dataset by 30 June 2024; include or update at least 5 new tools from ARISE members on the website by 31 August 2024; and other variables updated as needed by 30 November 2024; • Assistance provided to other related stakeholder and private sector events and other ad hoc meetings by 30 November 2024.
