Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will work under the general supervision of the AHP Project Engineer and the direct supervision of the AHP Engineer/Supervisor .
This description seeks to define, in a concise manner, scope of Artwork Restoration & the level of professional engagement. The Restoration task is represented by the project documentation, both drawn, scheduled and specified and this text should not exclude the Restorer’s responsibility if elements of the Artwork conservation scope are not captured within this abbreviated account.

The Scope of Works (SoW) for Africa Hall Project’s Artwork Conservation Contract covers the conservation of two (2) of the seven (7) artworks within Africa Hall.

The artworks included in Package-A contract are:
• ARTWORK 3 – LEATHER SKIN
• ARTWORK 7 – ETHIOPIAN RUG
The SoW includes management plans, dilapidation survey, cleaning, consolidation, conservation, storage (where relevant) and re-installation (where relevant) of the artworks above.

The artworks have been removed from the construction site and are in storage. The restorer shall allow to re-install the artworks in Africa Hall which lies in an operational UNECA Campus environment, on the construction site managed by the Main Building Works Contractor. The renovation works are presently underway (July 2023). The restorer must allow to coordinate with the Building Works Contractor in terms of scheduling, to re-install the works to enable the completion of the project and handover in at the end of June 2024.

The works are described in phases as below:
Phase 1: Commences upon the restorer taking possession of the artworks, and includes surveying the artwork, cleaning and storage, depending on the schedule, if the artworks are to be stored for longer than 1 month, prior to their re-installation; and the artwork to be conserved elsewhere in a workshop, established by AHP.

Phase 2: Includes the conservation and re-installation work, and shall occurs during the latter stages of the Main Building Works Contract, to be carried out after the Building Works Contractor has completed renovations in the area close to the artworks, which shall be appropriately clean and ready for artwork conservation activities without risk of further damage or debris accumulation from the building refurbishment.

Refer to Chapter 2.3 of the Specification for more detailed information about the scope of work.
Both phases of the work will be undertaken on a live construction site – the conservator shall allow for coordination with the Building Works Contractor as required, to enable timely undertaking of the work, to provide a safe working space, comply with their site safety, environmental, and other relevant management plans.

In addition to this , Conservator/s need to collect the below documents from Africa Hall Project Office, AHPO, and make thorough review of the requirements for conservation.

Qualifications/special skills

Conservation/ Restoration of two Artwork Packages in Africa Hall

Application Requirements:
Artwork restorers applying for this post are required to thoroughly review all the Site Data, Technical Specification and drawings provided by AHPO and fully comprehend the requirements for conservation of the indicated Artworks. Moreover, applicants should

1. Submit Operational Plan: Detailed operational proposal, including time frame, for Conservation of the Artworks independently.
2. Clearly indicated the group of professionals that should get involved in the restoration process of the Artworks (including Painter, Restorer, Chemist and others)
3. Provide evidence of experience in performing restoration of Artworks.
4. Attach testimony of training/course completed in conservation of Artworks.
5. Preferably, supply evidence of Institutional recommendation that testify your performance in similar Artwork restoration task.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the united Nations Secretariat. For this position , fluency in written and oral English is required.
