About the role
We are looking for a part-time colleague for at least 2 days a week, with the option to discuss additional days. The role will mainly focus on Finance and Governance and operational tasks as needed. We offer a temporary contract with the possibility to grow into a permanent position. You will be reporting to the two Country Directors and the local Board of Directors.
Working across a big program and different international teams, you will support developing and managing the systems and processes that keep Ashoka NL and our international partnerships running smoothly. The role entails financial management, including accounting and invoicing, but also grant management and partnership management, legal compliance, governance and HR management. It is important to have knowledge of, or interest in, working in the framework of various non-profit charitable/tax-exempt statuses, circumstances and regulations. Working language is English.

Responsibilities
Finance and Accounting Management
- Work closely with the local, external bookkeeper to oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with local reporting standards and regulatory requirements (non-profits and otherwise).
- Implement appropriate internal controls & mechanisms for receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets and actual expenditures; ensure appropriate safeguarding of company assets and the proper recording of financial transactions.
- Lead the coordination all audit activities, working closely with the local bookkeeper.
- Present quarterly financial reports and health checks, timely and accurately; clearly communicate financial statements; monitor progress and changes, risk management and keep the two Country Directors abreast of Ashoka’s financial status.
- Contribute to and monitor implementation of finance policies, procedures and administrative systems to support finance/program operations.
Strategic Operations
- Support Country Directors in engaging the Board of Directors around issues and trends in financial operating models and operational delivery.
- Lead on HR related functions and work closely with Ashoka’s global Talent team to ensure alignment of payroll administration and systems.
- Liaise with (pro-bono) legal advisers or other partners to ensure compliance.
- Lead on short term strategic Finance & Operations projects, such as Bioregional Weaving Lab budgeting or updating and implementing GDPR Policies.
- Contract administration for grants, vendors/contractors and internal operational arrangements with other Ashoka offices.
- Supporting the team with any other operational and governance tasks as required.
Day-to-day Financial Management
- Assist the Country Directors in overseeing all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant period.
- Coordinate with other Ashoka offices to ensure intra-group transactions are properly processed and recorded.
- Exercise efficient and proper day-to-day bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable processes, processing payments, the accounts reconciliation process, checking external monthly payroll etc.
- Work with the Global Finance team and the external bookkeeper to ensure correct bookkeeping and consolidation.
Required skills and experience
Essential:
- Experience and extensive knowledge on finance and accounting, preferably in The Netherlands and with charitable organizations;
- Highly organized and detail-oriented;
- Excellent time management, priority setting and multitasking skills;
- Takes own initiative and is solution-oriented, able to work under minimal supervision;
- Capable and excited to navigate through the complexity of an international organization to find contacts and solutions when the answer is sometimes not clear yet. Can take ownership and responsibility;
- A trusted partner, able to form good personal relationships. Who can cope with different time zones, currencies, fx rates, reporting types, charitable regulations, accounting standards – and importantly: with different cultures, language barriers and local priorities;
- A hands-on mentality.
- Proficient in Excel and English.
Highly desirable:
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience;
- Experience in non-for-profit sector, preferably in The Netherlands;
- IT-savvy.
Desirable:
- Familiar with SAP Business One, NetSuite, AccountView or other accounting system;
- Familiar with Salesforce (or other CRM system).
This is a remote working role.
