Job Purpose

 

Under the minimal supervision of the Senior Scientist, facilitate the planning, designing, and implementation of experiments in field and in controlled facilities, undertake genetic and/physiological studies for several key traits. The candidate will be involved in development of new protocols, data collection, genotyping and analysis. Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data gathered from the different studies and contribute to manuscripts for reports/publications as well as presentations/posters for national and international conferences. Supervise, coach and guide scholars, OJTs, researchers and research technicians.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Facilitate the planning, designing and implementation of all experiments in the field and laboratory.
  • Lead genotyping efforts including outsourcing genotyping to external vendors
  • Contribute to the development of research proposals including review of related literature, selection of adequate research tools and equipment, verification of suggested methodologies and establishment of parameters.
  • Work closely with other units in GRC to design experiments
  • Constantly monitor, evaluate and provide recommendations to improve research activities/tasks performed by Research technicians
  • Coordinate with required IRRI services and supplies to ensure smooth implementation of experiments
  • Consolidate, evaluate and analyze research data gathered from experiments.
  • Prepare and submit updates of research outputs to supervisor in a timely manner
  • Interpretation of results contribute to the writing of manuscripts for reports/publications
  • Supervise and lead the maintenance of accurate data recording and update database for efficient storage and retrieval of information

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture or Botany major in genetics, plant breeding, physiology or related discipline and 5 years of relevant work experience in rice research
  • Master of Science degree in genetics, breeding, physiology or related discipline and 2 year relevant work experience in rice research

 

Skills Required

 

Mandatory

  • Experience in rice research with special reference to genetics or physiology

Preferred

  • Knowledge of bioinformatic analysis, analysis of sequence data, marker design and validation
