Position Overview

UN Foundation’s Shot@Life grassroots advocacy campaign champions vaccines as the most proven, cost-effective intervention to save and improve the lives of children in developing countries and highlights UN leadership in vaccines.

The Shot@Life Communications Associate will work with the campaign’s Communications Officer to develop, implement, and support the communications, digital, and marketing needs of the campaign. They will report directly to the Shot@Life campaign’s Communications Officer.

This position is based in Washington, DC (hybrid schedule).

Essential Functions

Communications Strategy and Brand Management:

  • Support the Shot@Life Communications Officer and campaign team members to develop and implement communications strategies across email, web, multimedia, fundraising, and social media platforms.
  • Maintain branding and messaging consistency online and offline.
  • Support campaign collateral creation, distribution, and organization, including but not limited to impact stories, videos (concepts, scripting, and editing), photos, blogs, fact sheets, social media posts.
  • Develop a strong sense of Shot@Life brand and key messages.

Digital Communications, Writing, Content Creation, and Social Media:

  • Work with Communications Officer to conceptualize display and functionality of assets on the website and assist with Shot@Life website maintenance—including updating web pages such as landing pages and advocate resources—while ensuring optimization for search engine optimization and user experience.
  • Schedule and code email communications to various audiences, creating targeted distribution groups, and reporting on metrics.
  • Occasionally draft press releases and media advisories, assisting in the development of Shot@Life press kits and toolkits.
  • Work with Communications Officer to track and report on digital engagement metrics. Build monthly reports on social media, email, and web analytics to draw conclusions on key findings and conceptualize data-driven strategies to boost engagement.Responsible for sourcing, writing, and creating original content for use on social media. Gather relevant content to write accurate and engaging tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram posts, and create graphics where applicable.
  • Assist in crafting fundraising communications for the campaign in coordination with the Shot@Life’s communications priorities and standards.
  • Collaborate with the grassroots advocacy team to develop, write, and copy edit advocacy resources, including letters to the editor, toolkits, and training webinars, as well as provide support for grassroots advocate education programs.

Project Administration & Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Alongside the Communications Officer, work with the Shot@Life, Public Affairs, and Global Health teams to identify, explore, and implement creative digital strategies collaboratively.
  • Assist the Shot@Life grassroots, corporate, and direct advocacy team members with communications materials, including supporting the biannual Champions summits with speaker outreach, agenda development, photographer/videographer coordination, and attendee materials.
  • Support project management of Shot@Life’s digital initiatives, using software such as Asana, to ensure team is on-track with deliverables and meeting deadlines.
  • Create and maintain the comprehensive editorial calendar for all communications and marketing content, including blogs, social media, digital marketing, and ongoing grassroots and donor engagement/retention communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations, Political Science, Public Health or related field.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of communications experience working for a nonprofit, foundation, government/public sector, or equivalent experience in university organizations.
  • Experience with, or interest in, issue advocacy and/or campaigning.
  • Highly organized with an ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and balance long- and short-term projects, especially in a fast-paced, hybrid work setting.
  • Excellent attention to detail, sense of urgency, and strict adherence to deadlines.
  • Excellent writing and copy-editing skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical reports, or government regulations.
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate technical health concepts to a general audience.
  • Proactive and creative, with the ability to work independently to identify, explore, and implement creative online and social media strategies and make recommendations for content and online communications tools.
  • Strong skills working in teams and across many types of organizations — problem solver; relationship-builder; and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience writing audience-specific messaging for donor outreach and grassroots recruitment across a variety of digital platforms, including creating social media toolkits preferred.
  • Experience with HTML/CSS and WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, EveryAction, and Asana preferred.
  • Experience maintaining and managing organizational social media accounts, including monitoring and analytics. Experience with Hootsuite preferred.
  • Proficient in photography, filming, and basic video editing (e.g., in iMovie) for social media.
  • Multi-cultural experience, including experience living or working abroad, and general knowledge of global health issues and the United Nations preferred.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
