The Development & Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Associate to provide fundraising and outreach support as well as administrative assistance.

The Associate will be part of the Australia Development and Outreach team which serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in the region. This is part-time position at 19 hours per week, with an anticipated start in January 2024. This role requires availability to work occasional nights and weekend events, and potential travel.

The position will ideally be based in the Sydney office, though candidates based remotely in Melbourne are also encouraged to apply. The Associate will report to the two Associate Directors in the Development and Outreach Department, based in Melbourne and Sydney. The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely, but will be expected to work from the office about 1-2 days a week if based in Sydney. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist in the planning and implementation of major fundraising, cultivation, and outreach events, both in person and virtual, including, but not limited to, the flagship fundraising Annual Dinners in Melbourne and Sydney, receptions, and outreach events. This involves coordinating vendors, timelines, invitations, RSVPs, event materials, and venue details;

2. Assist in maintaining HRW’s Salesforce donor database by updating records and information, generating financial reports, lists and queries, overseeing data entry for special events and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data;

3. Prepare, draft, edit, format, and distribute correspondence, newsletters, documents and other materials, including web content for the Australia website and other relevant social media;

4. Assist with prospect and donor relationship management by providing support for engaging members’ networks, conducting research on individual and foundation prospects to prepare donor solicitation strategies, maintaining various contact lists, and drafting donor communications;

5. Support HRW’s Outreach Committees, and assist with the organization and execution of events;

6. Provide administrative support including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, background research, and travel arrangements as appropriate;

7. Assist with the recruitment and coordination of interns and volunteers; and

8. Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in marketing, international relations, social sciences, or an equivalent combination of work experience and qualifications (e.g. project management certification) is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple global locations are required.

2. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.

3. The ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities while working effectively toward deadlines is required.

4. Creativity, effective problem solving and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.

5. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including donors and external partners are required.

6. Proven proficiency in computer programs including Salesforce and MS Office applications, especially Excel, is required.

7. Strong interest in international human rights is highly desirable.

8. Experience living, working, studying abroad, or navigating other cultures is highly desirable.

9. Experience of planning and executing virtual and/or hybrid events is highly desirable.
