Contract Information

Fixed-term for one year (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance and funding

Salary Information

US$ 55,163 net per annum, plus post adjustment (currently US$ 36,793). Salary is free of income tax in the United Kingdom

Purpose

Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Director/ Head of Legal Office, and immediate supervision of the relevant Legal Officer the incumbent will provide additional support to the Legal Office with specific assignments and priorities to be determined on a needs basis

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide legal advice and guidance on the drafting of various contracts, cooperation agreements and Memoranda of Understanding.2. Assist in providing legal advice and guidance to various offices with regard to the implementation of agreements and contract management matters in relation to the establishment of agreements with donors; review of the legal aspects of the material and documents developed by these projects. Advice on copyright, confidentiality, privileges and immunities and other liability matters as well as resolution of potential disputes with donors and implementing partners.3. Carry out administrative, financial and technical backstopping of approved technical cooperation programmes executed by the Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division (TCID) in conjunction with other officers in the Division and their counterparts.4. Coordinate with Government officials, representatives of donor countries, UN agencies and relevant IMO officers, to ensure timely approval and delivery of programme activities to be implemented by the Division.5. Support the assessment and monitoring of budgets against actual expenditure of the Technical Cooperation programmes implemented by the Legal and External Relations Division. This will include monitoring milestones and activity completion, planned versus actual costs and checking budgets.. 6. Monitor and follow-up any necessary action in respect of requests from Member States for technical missions, in consultation with other competent officers.7. Handle enquiries from Governments, academic institutions and other interested bodies.8. Prepare relevant documents and legal analysis and related briefs for IMO meetings.9. Undertake such other duties related to the work of the Legal Affairs Office as may be assigned

Experience

A minimum of 2 years professional experience in legal administration, including drafting and managing legal memoranda, contract law, documents and briefs is essential

Education

University degree in law is required. An advanced university degree would be an asset

Language Skills

Proficiency in oral and written English is essential. Working knowledge of other UN languages would be an asset

Others

Demonstrable knowledge of IMO conventions, familiarity with the work and general functioning of the UN system and knowledge of the UN common system’s regulatory framework would be desirable.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is essential
