Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the Agency’s activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the safety and security related needs of its Member States.
The objective of the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) is to achieve and maintain a high level of safety of nuclear installations worldwide that are under design or construction or in operation. The Division does this by establishing standards of safety for the protection of health, including standards for nuclear power plants and other nuclear installations and facilities, and by providing for the application of these standards through, among other things, support for the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation programme, the rendering of safety review services, the promotion of education and training, the fostering of information exchange and the coordination of research and development. In addition, the Division helps ensure safety at nuclear installations by supporting international safety instruments such as the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Code of Conduct on the Safety of Research Reactors. NSNI comprises five Sections:

The main objective of the Regulatory Activities Section (RAS) is to help enhance effective regulatory infrastructures for nuclear safety in Member States based on IAEA safety standards and the use of self-assessment. The Section’s activities include safety review and advisory missions to Member States, the development and revision of safety standards, support for effective regulatory development for countries embarking on new nuclear power programmes, development of training programmes for regulators, and organizational aspects related to the Convention on Nuclear Safety.
Main Purpose
Under the supervision of the Head of the Regulatory Activities Section, the Associate Nuclear Safety Officer (RAS) contributes to assigned projects to support specific Divisional programmes aimed at enhancing regulatory infrastructures for nuclear safety in Member States.
Role
The Associate Nuclear Safety Officer (RAS) is: (1) an organizer and implementer, contributing to developing, planning and implementing activities on strengthening regulatory frameworks related to nuclear safety; (2) a facilitator, supporting communication and information dissemination regarding the ongoing activities; (3) a coordinator, helping international organizations and Member States to better coordinate activities related to strengthening regulatory frameworks to avoid duplication of efforts; and (4) a substantive contributor and presenter of programme activities and training materials.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Contribute to the planning, organizing and implementation of activities (Technical Meetings, Workshops, Missions) to enhance regulatory infrastructures for nuclear safety in Member States, including Integrated Regulatory Review Service Programme, regulatory framework development, capacity building and licensing of new technologies;
Provide technical support by developing and delivery of training materials to support the programme implementation;
Prepare regular reports of programme activities including draft narrative progress reports as well as consolidation and agreement of Sections contributions to regular Agency’s reports.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
University degree in engineering, science, international relations or other related field.
Minimum two years of relevant experience at the national, and/or international level.

Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $50377 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 25843*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance. Appointment information
- Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report.
- Staff members may be assigned to any location.
- Candidates appointed to posts in the Professional and higher categories are subject to IAEA rotation policy and their maximum tour of service shall normally be seven years.
