Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located within the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria in Damascus, Syria. The Associate Political Affairs Officer will report to the Head of Office in Damascus.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will perform the following duties: • Research and support the activities of the mission which includes the management (collection, coordination, analysis and dissemination) of information in order to support decision-making, early warning, policy development and planning for an integrated UN within the Mission. S/he provides basic analysis on political, socio-economic, humanitarian, security, and other regional politically relevant developments in an assigned area. • Analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events related to political issues in a specified area or subject matter and identifies areas of concern to support the decision-making, early warning, policy development and planning for an integrated UN within the Mission. • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the field mission. • Prepares summaries of updates from a wide variety of sources and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports. • Prepares talking points, attends meetings, and drafts minutes and notes and other written outputs as required. • Monitors political, socio-economic, humanitarian and security relevant regional developments related to Syria. • Provides input into political, humanitarian, security, and economic efforts and programmes. • Provides other information relevant to assigned area. • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data and identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as requested.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.

Work Experience
At least four (4) years, following completion of a first level university degree, or two (02) years, following completion of an advanced university degree, of progressively responsible experience in the field of political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience working in the UN Common System or comparable international organizations is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic is required.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
