Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Policy and Best Practices Service in the Policy, Evaluation and Training Division in the Department of Peacekeeping Operation. The Associate Political Affairs Officer reports to the team leader of the Knowledge Management and Guidance Team.

The Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET) is mandated to develop and disseminate the policy and doctrine guiding the work of Peacekeeping Operations. In addition, the division has the responsibility to evaluate, at the request of the heads of the departments, how those policies are being applied, gather lessons learned and best practices, and use that information to guide the development, coordination and delivery of standardized training, so as to complete the learning cycle. DPET is also responsible for developing and maintaining strategic cooperation with various UN and external partners.

Responsibilities

Under the overall direction of the Team Leader of the Knowledge Management and Guidance team the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Manages and coordinates the guidance focal point group in DPO-DPPA to facilitate and support the development of high quality guidance materials
• Conducts research assignments on issues relevant to UN peacekeeping.
• Analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources,; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues in a specified area or subject matter;
• Assists with briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
• Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
• Performs other related duties within the mandate of the Knowledge Management and Guidance team, as required.

Education

A first-level university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the G to P Examination.

Experience working in field operations of the United Nations or other comparable international organizations is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

• This position is temporarily available through 31 Oct 2023, with the possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
