The EIB, the European Union’s bank is seeking to recruit for its Operations Directorate (OPS), Equity, Growth Capital and Project Finance Department (EGPF), EIC Investment Services Division (3-EIC) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a (Associate) Portfolio Monitoring Officer*.

This is a full time, temporary position at grade 4/5.

The term of this contract will be until 31st December 2027.

Purpose

Under the supervision of the respective Head of Division, you will carry out regular and ad hoc monitoring, reporting and analytics activities of a EIC Fund investment portfolio. You will be responsible for (i) carrying out and producing analytics over the EICF Fund equity investment portfolio (ii) support in carrying out valuations on the transaction portfolio (iii) creating internal procedures and processes for portfolio monitoring and reporting purposes and support in implementation of relevant systems and tools, (iv) providing support in collecting periodic and ad hoc monitoring reports from investee companies, and (v) other activities in view of operational needs and creating efficient and scalable processes and procedures for the portfolio monitoring, reporting and management of the EIC Fund portfolio

Operating Network

As an (Associate) Portfolio Monitoring Officer, you will report to the EIC Head of Division and cooperate closely with the other team members in the EIC Investment Services Division. You will also have external contact with counterparts as well as with, among others, the Alternative Investment Fund Manager (AIFM) and other EIC Fund entities, EICF investee companies, European Commission, 3rd party consultants and services providers.

For equity operations deployed through special purpose vehicles, you will need to follow procedures outside of the EIB standards and reporting systems. Following the recent restructuring of the EIC Fund many of the procedures, processes and systems for portfolio management and reporting are still under development, allowing for the successful candidate to contribute to the development of new market-oriented and efficient processes.

The EIC Fund is the equity investment arm of the EIC programme with a mandate to invest between EUR 1.0m and EUR 15.0m in equity to selected European start-ups in the deeptech space. The current total portfolio of companies managed in the EIC Fund entails approximately 370 companies and is expected to grow to 500-600 companies over the following years. EIB acts as the investment adviser to the EIC Fund.

Accountabilities

  • Take responsibility, liaising closely with the HoD, HoUs and other members in in the division, in developing efficient, scalable and accurate portfolio monitoring and reporting procedures. Create action plan for implementation and coordinate the implementation of such procedures and processes.
  • Take responsibility in coordinating, liaising closely with external valuators, bi-annual valuations of the transaction portfolio and prepare valuation and portfolio performance reports as requested by external stakeholders
  • Support the implementation of relevant transaction and portfolio management systems in the EIC Fund.
  • Produce ad hoc and periodic operational, policy and/or financial analytics reports as may be required. Prepare presentations and present the results internally and to relevant EIC Fund stakeholders whenever requested.
  • Monitor the developments in the underlying transaction portfolio and flag potential risks and issues based on pre-agreed KPIs.
  • Perform ad hoc reviews, if necessary, in response to external market events.
  • Prepare presentations on portfolio status as may be requested for instance on thematic industry areas and/or company characteristics.
  • Check and, when necessary, update in a timely and accurate manner the data related to the assigned portfolio in the relevant EIC Fund’s IT systems.
  • Carry out any ad-hoc information request and/or potential horizontal task assigned by the management.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) ideally in Business Administration, Finance or Economics, preferably supplemented by postgraduate studies, and/or relevant training in financial sector analysis.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in banking, finance or in an investment fund environment.
  • Proven knowledge on carrying out financial and operational analyses on transaction and portfolio level, and knowledge of contractual clauses used in equity investment documentation.
  • Solid understanding of database and data visualization tools with knowledge of PowerBI or Tableau is considered an advantage
  • EXCEL user, basic knowledge of VBA or another programming language is a plus
  • Interest and experience in European venture capital and passion towards supporting innovative European start-ups.
  • Knowledge of the EIB’s mission, organisation and activities. Good Knowledge of EIC and the operating policies and principles of the EICF
  • Knowledge of the standard MS Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, PowerAutomate). Experience in other systems used for portfolio management and reporting an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (*) with a good command of the other. Knowledge of other languages would be an asset

(*) Unless stated explicitly as a required qualification, a good command of French is not a pre-requisite for hire. As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre-requisite for your future career development. Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process). Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
