Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Programme Management Section (PMS), United Nations Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Associate Programme Management Officer will report to the Chief of the Programme Management Section. The Division compiles and disseminates global statistical information, develop standards and norms for statistical activities, and support countries’ efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Programme Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

– Works with key clients to facilitate the implementation of programmes/projects; identify problems and issues to be addressed and recommend corrective actions; liaise with relevant parties; identify and track follow-up actions.
– Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, etc. to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
– Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submission, progress reports, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports.
– Contributes to the presentation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
– Provides administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of background documents and presentations and handling logistics.
– Performs related administrative duties (e.g. monitor accounts and payments to vendors and individual contractors, recruitrnent of project personnel).
– Performs other duties as assigned.

Competencies

Ability to assist with data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. Education

A first-level university degree in business administration, management, economics or a related field is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the field of project/programme management, administration, finance or related area is required.

No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young
Professionals Programme examination (YPP) or the G to P Examination (G to P).

Experience in strategic planning and budgeting in a UN or other similar international organization is desirable.

Experience in planning, organizing and implementing meetings, conferences or workshops, including their logistic and administrative aspects is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

• This position is temporarily available starting as soon as possible until 31 December 2023. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• Pursuant to section 7.11 of ST/AI/2012/2/Rev.1, candidates recruited through the young professionals programme who have not served for a minimum of two years in the position of their initial assignment are not eligible to apply to this position.
