The Development & Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Associate to provide fundraising and outreach support as well as administrative assistance.

The Associate will be part of the Santa Barbara Development and Outreach team which serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in the region. This is an incredible opportunity for career growth in a very successful fundraising environment at a fast-paced global organization.

This is part-time position at 20 hours per week, with an anticipated start in March 2025. This role requires availability to work occasional nights and weekend events, and potential travel. The position will be based in the Santa Barbara area and will report to the Director, Santa Barbara.

Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain HRW’s Salesforce and Marketing Cloud databases by ensuring data accuracy, drafting and tracking gift acknowledgments, creating and updating donor profiles, and generating donor interest reports. Support gift processing and assist with major gifts efforts through prospect research, meeting preparation, and donor communications.
  2. Assist in planning and implementing major fundraising and outreach events, including the Voices for Justice Annual Event in Santa Barbara, by coordinating vendors, timelines, invitations, RSVPs, event materials, venue details, and onsite logistics. Draft event communications, maintain attendee lists, and coordinate logistics for both in-person and virtual events.
  3. Prepare, draft, and distribute correspondence, newsletters, and web content tailored for the Santa Barbara audience. Collaborate with the city team on social media and email marketing content and maintain assist with maintaining an annual calendar to ensure consistent donor communications throughout the year.
  4. Provide comprehensive administrative support, including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, conducting background research, making travel arrangements, and responding to inquiries.
  5. Manage office operations by coordinating inventory, processing invoices, and handling mailings to donors and prospects.
  6. Support donor engagement by assisting with Committee members’ networks, preparing solicitation strategies, and drafting donor communications.
  7. Perform other tasks as required to advance HRW’s fundraising and outreach goals.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in marketing, international relations, social sciences, or an equivalent combination of work experience and qualifications (e.g. project management certification) is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is preferred.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple global locations are required.
  2. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.
  3. The ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities while working effectively toward deadlines is required.
  4. Creativity, effective problem solving and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences, including donors and external partners are required.
  6. Proven proficiency in computer programs including Salesforce and MS Office applications, and Excel, is required.
  7. Strong interest in international human rights is highly desirable.
  8. Experience living, working, studying abroad, or navigating other cultures is highly desirable.
  9. Experience of planning and executing virtual and/or hybrid events is highly desirable.

Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance. The salary range for this position if based in the US is $ 60,001- $64,328 prorated to $ 30,000.5- $32,164 to reflect a 50% schedule.
