This position is located in the Data, Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS), Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, Austria. Responsibilities
Within assigned authority, the Associate Social Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Contribute to the preparation and design of the research instruments on trafficking in persons, including questionnaires, data collection tools, protocols, standard operating procedures and training materials, in cooperation with the research team on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. • Carry out basic research on selected aspects of critical areas of concern related to drugs and crime, particularly on trafficking in persons, including collecting, analysing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources as well as participating in the analysis of global and regional developments and trends. • Contribute to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provide draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, such as draft background papers, reports, analytical briefs and studies on drugs and crime, including on trafficking in persons. • Develop and maintain reference/resource information on the measurement of crime-related Sustainable Development Goals Indicators, specifically SDG 16.2.2 and other crime-related data and prepare analysis of recent trends; liaise with governments to obtain and provide data and information; respond to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally. • Maintain awareness of current drugs- and crime-related issues, to include relevant political, policy, gender issues/considerations or other developments in specific sector, country or region concerned. • Provide support to intergovernmental processes dealing with drugs- and crime-related issues by: preparing inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies; following intergovernmental meetings and preparing summary reports and similar material. • Compile and analyse the data and other information necessary for the preparation of technical cooperation project proposals on drugs and crime. • Contribute to the development of statistical methodological guidelines, including the guidelines on the prevalence measurement on trafficking in persons. • Prepare documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects and monitor, backstop and assess the implementation of said programmes. • Contribute to the preparation of material and the delivery of capacity strengthening trainings on drugs and crime statistics and participate in fact-finding and advisory missions to government and other activities in support of work programme. • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in sociology, economics, statistics or other social science or related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professional Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in socioeconomic development, policy analysis, sociological research, data analytics or related area OR the successful completion of the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required. Work experience in applying and/or developing quantitative research methods in compliance with standard statistical principles is desirable. Work experience in using tools to produce statistical information and analyses is desirable. Work experience in analysing statistical data on drugs and crime and producing analytical reports is desirable. Work experience with the United Nations System or a similar international level is desirable. Work experience in training National Statistical Offices in low- or middle-income countries is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment

This temporary position is available for six months with the possibility of extension. Actual filling of this position and actual duration of the assignment is subject to availability of funding.
