The EIB, the European Union’s bank, is seeking to recruit for its Secretariat General (SG), Governing Bodies Department (GB), Linguistic Services Division (LING), German Unit (DE) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a (Associate) Translator/Reviser (German main language)*.

This is a full time position at grade 4/5 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

*internal benchmark: (Senior) Translator (core EIB lang)

Panel interviews are anticipated form November onwards.

Purpose

As the (Associate) Translator/Reviser, you will translate texts from English, and possibly one other source language into German, edit EIB publications, and provide assistance to the Head of Unit. You will work in a team of ten translators who make up one of the five units of the Linguistic Services Division and who contribute to meeting the Bank’s institutional translation requirements.

Operating Network

The (Associate) Translator/Reviser will report directly to the Head of the German Language Unit under the overall supervision of the Head of the Linguistic Services Division.

Accountabilities

  • Translation of texts from English, and possibly one other source language into German (mainly documents for the governing bodies and texts for publication in German produced by in-house staff and services).
  • Revision of translations from English, and possibly one other source language into German produced by in-house staff and freelance translators.
  • Proofreading.
  • Active contribution towards enhancing the terminological entries in the Division’s terminological database (Multiterm) and the IATE interinstitutional terminological database.
  • Contribution towards good maintenance and management of the Unit’s translation memories.
  • Leading or participating in unit-wide and/or cross-group projects and initiatives, as relevant.
  • Keeping abreast of the activities of the Bank in order to have a good understanding of the subject matter and topics of the documents to be translated.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) preferably in translation (ideally with very good knowledge in the fields of economics, business administration, finance and/or banking will be an asset) or in economics, business administration or other relevant field.
  • At least three years professional experience as a translator/reviser/editor in a national or international institution or in a private sector translation service (preferably with clients in the banking and finance sectors).
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to translate stylistically demanding texts for publication in print and on the internet
  • Fluency in English and German as the main languages. Excellent knowledge of French (*), Spanish or Italian. Knowledge of other languages of the European Union would be an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer-aided translation tools (preferably the TRADOS suite of tools, including Trados Studio) and of terminology tools used for terminology extraction, recognition and management (Multiterm, IATE).
  • Proficiency in the use of machine translation and in post-editing.
  • Strong reference collection ability.
  • Good knowledge of standard office tools, particularly MS Office.
  • Knowledge of the tasks and activities of the Bank would be an advantage.

(*) Unless stated explicitly as a required qualification, a good command of French is not a pre-requisite for hire. As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre-requisite for your future career development. Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process). Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The Bank offers appropriate training support.
