The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the Director of the Water Sciences Division (HYD), and under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist responsible for the projects funded by the Flanders Trust Fund for UNESCO, namely, Enhancing Climate Services for Improved Water Resources Management in Vulnerable Regions to Climate Change: Case studies from Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean” (CliMWaR); and Hydro-Resilience: Citizen and Open Science for Climate Adaptation; within the Section on Hydrological Systems, Climate change and Adaptation.
In this context, the Individual Consultant shall perform the following tasks:
I Within the project “Enhancing Climate Services for Improved Water Resources Management in Vulnerable Regions to Climate Change: Case studies from Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean (CliMWaR)”:
a. Coordinate the development of the online course ‘Drought and Flood Risk Management for decision makers’ on the UNESCO Open Learning platform. This shall include the coordination with partners, manage the setup of the course materials, develop communication materials, design of the kick-off session of the course and developing the course implementation report;
b. Coordinate the development of the online course ‘African Drought Atlas’ on the UNESCO Open Learning platform. This shall include the coordination with partners , manage the setup of the course materials on the platform, develop the communication materials, and design the kick-off session of the course and developing the course implementation report;
c. Coordinate the update of the ‘Latin American Drought Atlas’ and its translation to English. This shall include the communication with the original authors and partners and the publication designer to ensure the final publication is print-ready;
d. Develop the final narrative report of the project for the FUST Steering Committee meeting with the donor, based on the outputs produced by the different project components from July-December 2023;
II Within the project “Hydro-Resilience: Citizen and Open Science for Climate Adaptation”:
a. Coordinate the modification of the online course ‘Climate Services’ developed by ICTP to target Water Resources Management and coordinate the transfer of the developed materials to the UNESCO Open Learning Platform. This shall include the development of the communication materials and design of the kick-off session of the course and development of the course implementation report;
b. Coordinate the translation from English into Portuguese of the Climate Risk Informed Decision Analysis (CRIDA) manual published by UNESCO. This shall include the handling of the translation process, communication with the publication designer to ensure the final publication is print-ready;
c. Under the framework of the online course ‘Cookbook for Open Hardware Sensors for Water Resources Management’ on the UNESCO Open Learning platform, support the documenting of the pilot applications of the open hardware in at least 3 pilot countries. This shall include engaging with local partners in the targeted countries, summarizing results in a progress report;
d. Identify partners and coordinate the development of the online course on ‘Artificial Intelligence for Water Management’. This shall include the engagement with the project partners developing the relevant materials, the setup of the course into the UNESCO Open Learning platform, develop the communication materials and design and launch of the kick-off session of the course;
e. Prepare the 6-month progress report (in December and June) and narrative report of the HydroResilience project for the FUST Steering Committee meeting with the donor, based on the outputs produced by the different project components and earlier progress reports submitted;
f. Coordinate the development of the online course on ‘Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems for Disaster Risk Reduction and Water Management’ on UNESCO Open Learning platform. This shall include the identification of relevant knowledge holders, the setup of the course materials on the platform, develop the communication materials and exchange with course participants and design and launch of the kick-off session of the course;
g. Setup and manage the online course on ‘Citizen Science Toolbox for Water Management’ on UNESCO Open Learning platform. This shall include the setup of the course materials on the platform, develop the communication materials and exchange with course participants and design and launch of the kick-off session of the course;
h. Coordinate the mapping exercise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for Water Management. This shall include the development of the terms of reference, identify potential partners, setup a survey for the UNESCO Water Family and summarize the results of the survey;
i. Coordinate the organization of a Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and/or Open Science. This shall include the identification of potential speakers, and coordination of the programme and the setup of a hackathon targeted to youth;
III Within the Regular Programme of the Water Science Division:
a. Coordinate with international partners to identify synergies and a proposal for collaboration and joint work plan focusing on citizen and open science for water management;
b. Design a reporting tool for the implementation of IHP-IX. This shall include implementing a pilot phase, developing a pilot reporting form, database and pilot report structure for the implemented activities for each of the 10 IHP-IX Outputs of Priority Area I;
c. Coordinate the reporting phase on implemented activities of the Priority Area I under IHP-IX for the biennium 2022-2023, collect responses and ensure the generation of individual reports for the Priority Area I;

The incumbent shall work full-time at UNESCO premises and shall submit a monthly activity report.
