Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Verbatim Reporting Service, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGCAM) at Headquarters. The Verbatim Reporting Service produces, in all six official languages, in extenso records of the meetings of the Assembly, the Security Council and other bodies. The Chief of Verbatim Reporting Service reports to the Director, Meetings and Publishing Division.

Responsibilities

Under the broad supervision of the Director, Meetings and Publishing Division, the Chief of
Verbatim Reporting Service formulates and implements the work programme of the Service
by performing the following:

• Ensures timely issuance of accurate, edited and corrected verbatim records of meetings of
the Security Council, General Assembly and other United Nations bodies, as appropriate, in
all six official languages of the Organization.
• Formulates and develops guidelines, instructions and priorities for verbatim reporters and
revisers.
• Serves as the final arbiter on the content of the verbatim records.
• Oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Service, ensures that programmed
activities are carried out in a timely fashion.
• Leads, supervises and carries out the work programme of the Service under his/her
responsibility. Co-ordinates the work carried out by different work units under the Service.
• Ensures that the outputs produced by the Service maintain high-quality standards and
comply with the relevant mandates.
• Assists the Director in preparing the work programme of the Division, determining
priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery.
• Undertakes or oversees the programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning
of the Service, including reporting on budget/programme performance, evaluation of staff
performance (PAS), interviews of candidates for job openings, evaluation of candidates and
participation in examination boards and interviews.
• Manages, guides, develops and trains staff under his/her supervision.
• Fosters teamwork and communication among staff in the Service and across organizational
boundaries.
• Serves as Officer-in-Charge of the Division when required.
• Performs other related tasks, as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in public administration, social sciences or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible relevant experience in conference
management and planning, language related services, administration or related field is required.

A minimum of 5 years of experience in activities related to conference servicing in the
United Nations system, in international organizations or at the international level are required.

Experience in leading and managing large and diverse teams on language related services is required.

Experience in change management and managing in a multicultural setting is desired.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include substantive assessment, such as a written test, which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
