JOB PURPOSE
As Amnesty International’s (AI) lead expert on specific countries or other geographical or thematic areas, the researcher will lead on the development, implementation, drafting, application and evaluation of research in relation to agreed priorities on greater China. They will provide research expertise, research management, political judgment and strategic insights to the broader work of the Amnesty International International Secretariat (IS), including ESEAPRO.
ABOUT YOU
As an experienced researcher with a dedicated commitment to human rights, you will have proven experience of conducting research on human rights issues, specifically in the Greater China region. You will be able to exercise good political judgement, through analysis and diplomacy, to develop effective strategies to impact on human rights in the Asia region, with excellent communication skills in both English and Chinese.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead on the development of overarching research strategies, planning, outputs and advocacy activities to identify and address civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights concerns impacting people in greater China, including its autonomous regions, Hong Kong and Macau, and Taiwan;
- Design and implement specific research projects, and participate in the design and implementation of monitoring and impact evaluation plans for these projects as well as relevant initiatives begun by others;
- Organize, take part in and lead, where agreed, field research and other missions, specifically in areas of information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of human rights concerns, including in response to crisis situations;
- Contribute to producing timely, high quality and effective reports, data visualisations, briefings, position papers, action materials, press releases, and other internal and external documents, working closely with campaigns, comms and advocacy roles in Amnesty’s ESEAPRO team to communicate and deliver outputs with impact;
- Have the willingness and ability to travel, including to the Asian region, for research, ESEAPRO meetings and other events as required for the delivery of agreed projects.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Proven experience of working in a human rights research role, or demonstrated responsibilities undertaking research on human rights or related issues;
- Specialist knowledge and preferably first-hand experience of the geographical and/or thematic areas in your brief and an in-depth understanding of the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues in them;
- Ability to understand and express ideas in English and Chinese in a fluent, clear and concise way, both orally and in writing; draft text in a variety of styles, e.g., documents such as substantial reports, government correspondence and media and action materials;
- Ability to deal in a sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, including survivors of human rights violations and others who may be distressed.
