Clinical Fellow with Dhaka Hospital of Clinical and Diagnostic Services under the Office of Executive Director (Adv#239/2024)

icddr,b is a Bangladesh-based international health research institute that strives to solve key public health problems through high-quality scientific research and innovation. As a values-based organization, icddrb encourages women and people with disabilities.

Dhaka Hospital was established by icddr,b in 1962 primarily to meet the urgent need to treat patients, particularly children, with severe diarrhoeal disease. It has since grown into a nationally important centre treating more than 200,000 patients a year. It acts as a beacon illustrating what can be achieved by a hospital facility even within a developing world setting. Dhaka Hospital provides an infrastructure for a wide range of clinical research projects. It also plays a critical role in areas such as disease surveillance, monitoring for antimicrobial resistance and clinical training. Dhaka Hospital offers a full range of services, particularly for diarrhoeal and respiratory disease, with infants and children representing a high proportion of patients. It delivers outstanding care, saving an estimated 40,000 lives that might otherwise be lost every year.

The fellowship programme is designed to provide thorough clinical training in Pediatrics and Internal medicine with a special emphasis on diarrhoeal diseases, Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), malnutrition and exposure to research methods. The fellows learn through treating patients, participating in the ward rounds and clinical meetings or seminars. The training programme is designed to prepare the fellows to build a professional career in clinical research. Successful completion of the fellowship programme will help to achieve eligibility criteria for clinical training to FCPS or MCPS level. The trainees are required to perform shift duties covering days and nights. They might need to perform long duty hours. Training at the icddr,b is recognised by the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons (BCPS) for MCPS and FCPS; recognition of 6 months for Medicine (after 1 year of fellowship) and 1 year for pediatrics (after 18 months of fellowship) will be provided.
