icddr,b is a Bangladesh-based international health research institute that strives to solve key public health problems through high-quality scientific research and innovation. icddrb as a values-based organization encourages women and people with disabilities.

Matlab Hospital in Chandpur district was established by icddr,b in 1963 primarily to treat the diarrhoeal patients residing in Matlab and surrounding area. Now, it has grown into a regionally important diarrhoea treatment centre managing more than 50,000 patients a year. Besides this, Matlab Hospital provides maternal and child health (MCH) care to women of child bearing age and under five children residing in icddr,b service area. Engaged in the treatment of rural people with diarrhoeal diseases, malnutrition and pneumonia; Matlab Hospital is playing a vital role in improving the health outcomes for the most vulnerable. Matlab Hospital provides an infrastructure for a wide range of clinical research projects. It also plays a critical role in areas such as diarrhoeal disease surveillance and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in rural settings.

The fellowship programme is designed to provide thorough clinical training in Pediatrics, Internal medicine and reproductive health issues with a special emphasis on diarrhoeal diseases, Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), malnutrition and maternal and child health care. The fellows learn through treating patients, participating in the ward rounds and clinical meetings or seminars. The training programme is designed to prepare the fellows to build a professional carrier in clinical research. The trainees are required to perform shift duties covering days and nights. They might need to perform long duty hours. Candidates after successful completion of fellowship training will be given preference to pursue a career in clinical research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Management;
  • Admit and evaluate new patients and decide appropriate action (e.g. treatment and discharge, or admission into clinical units);
  • Conduct a thorough physical examination and gather detailed patient history;
  • Request and administer tests, if required (e.g. blood test, x-ray);
  • Interpret test results; consult with senior doctors (if required);
  • Diagnose condition and prescribe treatment;
  • Manage complicated cases;
  • Manage ANC, delivery, newborn, KMC in the MCH unit;
  • Regular follow-up of admitted patients to review the response to treatment;
  • Document all patient interactions using computers;
  • Review complicated cases with senior doctors during their daily morning and evening rounds;
  • Take actions on recommendations made by senior doctors;
  • Coordinate patient-care activities with nurses and other hospital staff;
  • Supervise and guide other members in the team for day-to-day tasks;
  • Support clinical research work in the hospital in order to ensure proper clinical management.

Required qualification and experience:

  • MBBS from reputed institute with good academic result (Please mention the percentage of marks/CGPA in your application) and registered by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.
  • Candidates with postgraduate training in Gynae & Obs or in Pediatrics will get preference.
  • Candidates who are self-motivated, enthusiastic and are interested to stay at Matlab for at least 2 years are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent communication and writing skills in English;

Duty Station: Matlab, Chandpur District

Contract Type and duration:

The appointment will be made on a Fellowship basis for 1 year which is renewable for another year depending on performance and availability of funds.

Salary & benefits:

Stipend and facilities: Monthly stipend amounting to Tk. 59,050/- and subsidized canteen food.

Evaluation & Certification: The progress of the Fellows will be monitored and evaluated. On successful completion of training and final evaluation, the Fellow will be awarded a certificate.

Prospects: After completion of the program, the Fellows may apply against any other suitable positions at the Centre. However, such employment is not guaranteed. The selected Fellows will not be eligible for any other fellowship program at the Centre.
