This position is remote-based in Washington DC; WRI Global Office (US) and only for consideration within the United States where WRI is state registered. The Data Lab is WRI’s core data innovation and delivery unit. Job Highlight:

 

Reporting to the Data Lab Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for administering AWS resources, writing infrastructure as code, supporting GIS analysts, researchers, and data scientists, and managing DevOps processes. You have expertise in cloud technologies, infrastructure automation, Docker, Kubernetes, and a deep understanding of GIS applications. You will be supported by the Data Lab Engineering and Data Science teams, as well as the Data Infrastructure Product Manager and Head of Engineering. You will be fully remote.

 

What will you do:

 

Cloud Administration (40% time):-

 

  • Manage and optimize AWS resources for performance, security, and scalability
  • Implement and manage security measures, including IAM policies, VPC / Security Group configurations, and encryption protocols
  • Monitor AWS and GCP services, including EC2, RDS, ECS, EKS, Lambdas, EMR, and associated supporting services; set up alerts, and respond to incidents promptly
  • Handle support requests from individual researchers, product teams, and data science teams related to using cloud resources effectively
  • Develop and implement technical architecture, automations, and procedures for managing cloud resources
  • Develop documentation and guidelines related to cloud administration and use

 

DevOps Engineering (30% time):

 

  • Write and maintain infrastructure as code (IaC) scripts using tools such as Terraform or AWS Cloud Formation
  • Automate the deployment and configuration of cloud resources, ensuring consistency and reliability
  • Integrate IaC into continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Implement and manage CI/CD processes (Github Actions, Jenkins) for efficient software delivery
  • Orchestrate and manage containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes or ECS
  • Assist product and data engineering teams in resolving service outages and other urgent support needs

 

Research Infrastructure Support (30% time):

 

  • Assist GIS analysts, researchers, and data scientists in leveraging cloud resources for their projects
  • Provide technical support, troubleshoot issues, and optimize cloud-based GIS applications and workflows
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement GIS solutions on the cloud platform

 

What will you need:

 

  • Education: You have a completed Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Computer Science, Information Technology or Engineering etc.)
  • Experience: You have a minimum of 5 years’ full-time relevant experience in deploying cloud-based resources using Infrastructure as Code technologies such as Terraform or Cloud formation
  • Experience administering cloud-based compute and storage resources in a major public cloud environment, preferably Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Experience deploying software using container technologies such as Docker, Elastic Container Service, or Kubernetes
  • Experience with Continuous Integration tools such as Github Actions, Jenkins, or AWS Code Build
  • Experience with Linux systems administration(Preferred)
  • Experience with GIS tools and software, such as ESRI ArcGIS, Postgres/PostGIS, and Google Earth Engine
  • Languages: English required. Additional language is a plus
  • Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position is based. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization

 

 

Potential Salary:Salary range is between 101,000 and 108,000 USD. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
