Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships This position is located in the Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA) in Nairobi (Kenya), Division for Operations (DO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Within the framework of the UNODC Regional Programme for Eastern Africa, the incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for Eastern Africa (ROEA) and under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer heading the Transnational Organized Crime , Illicit Trafficking and Terrorism Prevention Programme for Eastern Africa. S/he will work in close cooperation and coordination with the Programme Management Officer in Kenya and the programme support staff at ROEA in Nairobi. These internship positions are offered for an initial period of three months with various reporting dates, starting from July 2024, with an opportunity for extension, subject to the needs of the department and the availability of the intern. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. For more information please visit www.unodc.org Duties and Responsibilities The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Support with the identification, review and documentation of human-interest stories and other relevant information for the purpose of effective communications; • Engage in outreach and communication efforts to promote and support various advocacy and communication campaigns and activities ; • Support with the coordination of communication related activities to ensure cohesive communication outputs; • Support writing, reviewing and updating social media content to raise visibility of the Programme’s work; • Perform other tasks as necessary.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for this internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: • Basic knowledge of design and video editing tools like Adobe illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, PremierPro and Canva; • Interest in digital media and communications campaigns; • Excellent writing, editing and presentation skills. • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)( preferably in the areas of Communication, Journalism, Marketing or equivalent). Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
