Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. As part of UN-REDD Programme, UNEP has engaged in increasing commitments and ambition worldwide in the response to the climate crisis through forest protection and restoration. The UN-REDD programme plays a pivotal role in delivering this ambition. In this regards, UN-REDD aims to achieve four outcomes: • Outcome 1: Forest-based GHG emission reductions and enhanced removals, of increasing quality unlocked at a level of GtCO2e by 2025 (forest solutions realized) • Outcome 2: Enabling USD 5 billion mobilized for REDD+ from results-based payment schemes, carbon markets and other transactions under Art.6 of the Paris Agreement (forest solutions rewarded) • Outcome 3: More than 15 Countries significantly enhance the forest component of their NDCs in the 2020-2025 cycle, including quantitative targets (forest solutions enhanced) • Outcome 4: Connecting actors and knowledge for forest solutions (Nature-based Solutions movement to accelerate climate action) UN-REDD Asia Pacific under the Climate Mitigation Unit (CMU) is looking to engage the consultant to provide technical inputs on communications and visibility in Asia Pacific. The consultant will be based at the UNEP Regional Office for Asia Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok and under the supervision of the Regional Coordinator for UN-REDD Asia Pacific and work in close consultation with the Global UN-REDD Communications Manager and the Climate Action Pillar lead. The consultant will: 1. Develop and implement the communication strategy for the upstarting project “Climate Action and Reduction of Emissions for Green Economy” in Riau Province • Design a comprehensive communication strategy to promote the project and its key initiatives, aligning with project goals and objectives. • Develop content about the project for national, regional and global outreach. • Produce visually engaging materials such as infographics, brochures, and promotional videos, ensuring compliance with donor guidelines for visibility. • Ensure all content is tailored to specific audiences, including donors, local communities, government bodies, and international stakeholders. 2. Provide technical support on a communications campaign for the “ASEAN Social Forestry” • Prepare a plan for communications campaign and visibility for the project and coordinate its implementation in 2024. • Contribute with technical inputs on communication to national and regional events • Compile key results messages and visuals for the development of Phase II. • Coordinate the visibility of the project, including infographics, brochures, and promotional videos, ensuring compliance with donor guidelines for visibility 3. Provide technical support on the implementation of the “SAFE Initiative Fundraising and Visibility Plan” • Compile key results messages and visuals for fundraising purposes. • Coordinate the visibility of the project, including infographics, brochures, and promotional materials, ensuring compliance with donor guidelines for visibility • Support the visibility of the “SAFE Initiative” in national, regional and global events increasing its profile. 4. Technical inputs on communications and visibility for 3 national and 1 regional UN-REDD events • Contribute to the implementation of the UN-REDD 2025 country work plans from a communication and visibility perspective • Contribute with regional content to the “Bridge to Belem campaign” • Develop content and material for national and regional events • Support the visibility of the UN-REDD programme at national (Indonesia, Viet Nam, Papua New Guinea) and regional (such as Singapore or Asia Pacific climate week) level.
Qualifications/special skills
Education: • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) degree in communcations, international relations is required. • A first-level university degree in the above-mentioned fields, in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience, will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience: • A minimum of five years in roles related to communications, media, and developing content. • Experience working on climate change is required. • Experience of working at the country level in the Asia-Pacific region is desirable. Skills: • Ability to advise strong advocacy messaging and communications outreach is required • Ability to produce targeted communications plans and products is required. • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey key messages are required. • Ability to identify priority activities is required. • Graphic design and video production skills are desirable. • A demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations, knowledge of the United Nations system, and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter is desirable.
Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consulting position, fluency in oral and written English is required.
