Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This consultancy will be located at the Gigiri Master Plan project in the UNON Division of Administrative Services. The Gigiri Master Plan (GMP) is intended to address the deteriorating conditions and limited capacity of the conference facilities at the United Nations Offices at Nairobi (UNON).. The consultant will report to the Chief, Programme Management and the Project Manager. Responsibilities: Support outreach initiatives related to voluntary contributions to Donors, Member States, Private Sector entities within the guidelines established by the United Nations. Prepare brochures, presentations and other marketing material, including a project video, to solicit Voluntary Contributions or in-kind contributions from Member States and other potential donors for various aspects of the project. Work with the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) to identify the ‘Do’s and Don’t’s’ permissible for Contractors and Consultants engaged by the GMP. Regularly update the UN internet websites and UNON intranet sites with project articles and stories in support of the overall GMP Communication Strategy. Support development of the GMP social media strategy and social media accounts and coordinate implementation. Draft/compile information and communication products for target audiences, including press releases, reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, etc. Focus communication initiatives such as power point presentations to key stakeholders key topics such as ‘sustainability’ and ‘accessibility’ and others as identified by the GMP. Organize or participate in the organization of conferences, press briefings, meetings etc. Prepares presentations and briefing materials for officials prior to their participation in such events.
Qualifications/special skills
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications or related field is required. A first-level university degree with two year’s work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. a. Two years of relevant experience in social media, public information, journalism, communication, media affairs, campaigns or events of public interest, or related area is required. b. Video development and editing skills are required. c. Knowledge in developing information/communications products for target audiences such press releases, reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, catalogues, video editing and graphic editing tools desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ” Knowledge of equals a rating of’ confident” in two of the four areas.
