Title of Assignment: Communications Specialist

Name of unit/sector: News and Media Division

Place of Assignment: Geneva, Switzerland

Expected duration of assignment: ASAP for an initial period of 6 months, renewable up to a maximum of 24 months

1. Objective of the assignment

The Communications Specialist will develop and implement a new communications strategy for WIPO’s activities supporting the global creative sector, in close collaboration with colleagues from the Copyright and Creative Industries Sector (CCIS). The incumbent will prepare, design and assist in the creation of media products (script and content) showing how individuals and enterprises use copyright and related rights and other intellectual property (IP) rights to stimulate and boost the economic development of the creative sector.

2. Deliverables

• Document and analyze existing communications efforts across WIPO related to copyright and related rights for the creative sector;
• Create with CCIS a strategic communications plan related to WIPO’s promotion of the creative sector and contribute to its implementation;
• Plan content creation efforts (articles, video scripts, social media posts) showing enterprises and individuals using copyrights for business growth;
• Coordinate the creation of content with communications focal point of CCIS;
• Liaise with other communication specialists across the Organization to source material appropriate for new social media presences;
• Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the communications strategy and suggest improvements;
• Seek out and engage with potential communications collaborators for CCIS, including event-based and marketing (print and online) activities to promote CCIS objectives within diverse platforms.

3. Reporting 

The Communications Specialist will work under the supervision of the Senior Media Officer in the News and Media Division, in close collaboration with colleagues from CCIS.

4. Profile

Education

Essential:
University degree in a communications-related area, social sciences, or other relevant discipline

Experience

Essential:
At least 6 years of experience in external communications for a public or private sector organization.

Excellent portfolio with a proven track record of successful communication strategy examples.

Proven experience in communications, public relations, or marketing, with a strong understanding of communication strategies, audience targeting, and message development that resonates with a diverse, international audience.

Understanding the cultural nuances, communication preferences, and sensitivities of a global audience is essential.

Desirable:
Experience in story telling through the creation of high-quality content (written and/or video) and media performance evaluation (KPIs, analytics).
Experience in, or demonstrated understanding of, the global creative sector

Skills

Essential:
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
• Excellent creative writing skills, including film scripting
• Excellent research skills
• Excellent ability to work quickly and calmly under tight deadline requirements
• An eye for detail and a high level of accuracy, good understanding of political dynamics and diplomacy
• Ability to grasp new ideas and subjects quickly

Desirable:
• Ability to work with visual media software platforms, including Adobe Creative Suite (notably Photoshop)
• Knowledge of WIPO and IP
• Demonstrated expertise in planning and executing communication strategies for events combined with offline and online social media platforms.

Languages

Essential:
Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English

Desirable:
Working knowledge of French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian or Arabic

5. Duration of contract and payment

The contract will run for an initial period of 6 months, renewable depending on performance, up to a maximum of 24 months.

Applicants are requested to provide an indication of their remuneration expectations in Swiss francs (daily rate).
