Job Description:

Major Responsibility

Provide Technical support

(Supports volunteers & HDALs to deliver effective nutrition SBC at group and household level and facilitates feeding demonstration session )

  • Identify and register pregnant and lactating women (PLW), children under two, and WDALs in their respective Kebele, formulate Nurturing Care Groups (NCGs) and Neighbor Groups of PLWs, and select Volunteers.
  • Facilitate community volunteer training on Community Participatory Nutrition Promotion (CPNP), NCG model, and mentor to ensure knowledge retention and skills proficiency.
  • Supporting HEWs to screen and enroll underweight children into CPNP sessions for rehabilitation in their respective Kebele and strengthen referral linkage
  • Ensuring the volunteers have the necessary supplies to conduct CPNP and NCG sessions (e.g., Flip Chart, register sheet, and all other required materials).
  • Facilitating bi annual experience-sharing meetings with NCGVs following the household counseling visits.
  • Conduct periodic capacity gap assessments  and quality verification of community volunteers / HDALs, HEWs, and health posts and provide focused technical support on the identified gaps.
  • Support other complimentary health and nutrition interventions, such as home gardening, consumption of animal source foods, mental health linkages, and other programming that supports caregivers and child adoption of nutrition and WASH behavior

 

Facilitate NCG & CPNP sessions and related activities

  • Facilitate monthly meetings with groups of NCG volunteers on the 16 sessions of the NCG approach, and coach them to conduct bi weekly session with their peer caregivers (Neighbor Groups)
  • Facilitate identification and tracking of new pregnancies, births and death in NCG and in their respective Neighbor Group
  • Routinely facilitate 2-week CPNP sessions, follow up children for sustained weight gain and continue support for HEWs and volunteers to handover the sessions slowly to HEWs and community volunteers
  • Facilitate home visit for NCGV as well as Neighbor Caregivers who are unable to attend the group meeting
  • Support routine screening of caregiver with common mental health problem and  link  women to GPM+ sessions

 

Monitoring progress and quality assurance of health and nutrition interventions

  • Ensure implementation quality of health and nutrition intervention such us CPNP, NCG and other complementary activities
  • Conduct QIVIC every 3 months for each volunteer under your Kebele when they conduct household counseling & CPNP sessions and give them constructive feedback in their areas of improvement and follow up
  • Keep quality records and documents and report to your supervisor and also use the information for quality improvement as well as to support kebele Food Security Taskforce (KFSTF) decision making process
  • Provide accurate and timely information on the work of the volunteers / HDALs to the MHPSS and Nutrition Officers on a bi-weekly basis and review the HEW reports to help ensure that the information presented is real and complete
  • Conduct joint, supportive supervision with woreda and kebele staff on the health and nutrition activities of SPIR II

 

Strengthen partnership, collaboration, and working relationship.

  • Provide support and referral linkage for pregnant and lactating women to Temporary Direct Support and children with severe acute malnutrition to CMAM and to Temporary Direct Support, as identified in the NCG and child screening session (CPNP), and women with mental health conditions to gPM+.
  • Actively participate and represent SPIR II at the Kebele level in forums such as the KFSTF and community health platforms like the Primary Health Care Unit.
  • Promote integrating the project plan into the PA/Kebele plan.
  • Work closely with HEWs, schools, religious leaders, CBOs, and communities at the village level to establish adequate service linkages.

Knowledge management, learning dissemination and reporting

  • Routinely share program reach data to SPIR II supervisor and M&E team
  • Support the collection of case stories, lesson learning and best practices documentation through identifying cases and facilitating capturing and documentation process
  • Support the quarter and annual report by providing accurate health & nutrition intervention data

 

KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ROLE

 

Required Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in Health and Nutrition programs in a rural development setting
  • Skills in facilitating SBC (Social and Behavior Change) sessions and experience in leading group BCC (Behavior Change Communication) sessions.
  • Ability to train and mentor many NCG Volunteers and HDALs (Health Development Army Leaders).
  • Experience in conducting high-quality field-level data collection.
  • Familiarity with the community health care system, particularly PHCU (Primary Health Care Unit) and referral linkage.
  • Proficiency in the local language (Tigrinya) and understanding of written and spoken English.
  • Capability to work effectively in a team with individuals from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

Respect for local culture, traditions, and values.

Required Education, training, license, registration, and certification

  • Public Health, or nursing or other clinical degree with 1-2 years’ experience in a rural setting
  • Diploma in Clinical Nursing / Comprehensive Nursing, with 3-5 years’ experience in rural setting

 

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications

  • NGO Experience
  • Community-based Participatory Nutrition Promotion, Care group model, dialogue-based counseling techniques to address nutrition during the 1000-day window, and a positive deviance approach to improve complementary feeding are strongly preferred.

 

Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement :Work in Kebeble level setting with HEWs at the Health post

Language Requirements:  Fluent in Local Language (Tigrinya)
