Program Overview

WRI Indonesia is an independent research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. At WRI Indonesia, we aim to bring innovations in research and business approaches to create the enabling conditions for Indonesia to achieve robust economic growth while respecting environmental and social values. We seek to contribute to the accomplishment of ambitious sustainable development goals through working with leaders in public and private sectors, as well as collaborating with civil society organizations, in turning big ideas into action.

Within our Forests, Land use, and Water (FLW) Program, Forests, People, and Climate (FPC) is a collaboration between philanthropic donors and civil society organizations (CSOs) seeking to halt and reverse tropical deforestation while delivering just and sustainable development. We focus on equitable and enduring solutions that safeguard tropical forests and support those defending them, in particular Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Through this collaboration, experts, CSOs, and donor partners identify the strategic priorities that must be addressed to end and reverse deforestation, mobilize the funding for those priorities, and connect with and strengthen broader networks of partners to move funding to support the work.

In collaboration with partners, including the World Resources Institute (WRI), FPC is designing a Monitoring and Learning (M&L) framework, which is fully integrated with FPC’s Indonesia strategy development and implementation processes, to help inform our collective efforts and refine the strategies based on what we learn about how and where FPC support is having the greatest impact. The M&L framework aims to function as a service to the field, so that FPC and its partners can track progress towards objectives and goals more effectively (and use monitoring evidence to adapt living strategies), harness decision-useful data, and collectively shift the power associated with monitoring – typically a top-down, donor-driven, and resource-intensive process – to tropical forest countries.

FPC Indonesia Strategy and Pathways

Help Indonesia achieve a tipping point by 2030, where economic, political, and social incentives favor a green development path that ends deforestation, promotes ecosystem restoration, and respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities, and smallholder farmers. To realign the incentives to favor forest conservation and restoration by promoting green development in Indonesia, this Indonesia Strategy aims to bring about five interconnected outcome pathways until 2030:

• Secure the rights and welfare of IPLC: firmly recognize and implement IPLC tenure and resource rights, resulting in increased welfare and quality of life, forest protection, and supporting their advocacy for enforcement of green development policies.
• Strengthen civil society and social resilience: increase CSOs resilience and protect and support the space for social movements and civic organizations to further advance public social, environmental, and economic goals of green development.
• Change the narrative: demonstrate that green development is the most attractive economic and social development vision for the public, decision-makers, businesses and investors.
• Reshape the economy: significantly increase capacity of governments, businesses, indigenous groups, and smallholders to conduct research, advocacy, and the implementation of green development that promotes forest, peat, and mangrove ecosystem protection and restoration.
• Refine the politics: ensure that national and sub-national leaders understand the importance of pursuing green development, how it can strengthen their political legitimacy, and how to implement it.

Job Highlight

Data Visualization Engineer will support the project by developing the FPC project’s web-based dashboard that could demonstrate baseline data for all pathways. Data management and collection using crawling methods related to the required data list are also falls within the scope of responsibilities of this position.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Research Analyst for Nature and Food System, the position holder will work closely and collaboratively with the System Developer Lead and the rest of the project team. This position will be based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement and required to do travel as assigned.

What You Will Do

Program & Project Implementation (70%)

• Design dashboards and visualizations (commonly in Tableau).
• Develop user interface designs based on a design system, usability results, and written requirements.
• Demonstrate a rich sensitivity to the composition of user interface components (navigation, data tables, filters) and style (spacing, typography, color).
• Design flow diagrams, wireframes, and high-fidelity screen designs to convey solutions and obtain stakeholder feedback.
• Brainstorm, design, develop and evaluate effective data visualizations that are insightful, attractive, and usable in business decision-making.
• Work with teammates to understand stakeholder analytic needs and user interactions to design and develop optimal solutions.
• Actively participate in product development processes, including iterative prototyping, feedback cycles, and design reviews.
• Acquire, process, parse and occasionally combine diverse datasets while creatively looking for opportunities to tell stories in new and different ways by visualizing data
• Suggest and build static and interactive data visualizations and novel ways of telling stories
• Use key drivers to create concepts for new approaches to visual stories

Research & Knowledge (30%)

• Develop and maintain standards for the development of design systems (repository of reusable templates, more).
• Monitoring feedback from usability sessions and surveys for improvements in product development.
• Identify interesting datasets and stories, and report and write them
• Collecting data using crawling methods in the media realm
• Provide support for Ad-Hoc data visualization tasks upon the approval of Manager or Supervisor.

What You Will Need

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree, in a related field, preferably with coursework in information technology, system analyst, web design and programming, and/or information management system.
• Proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia;
• Minimum 5 years of experience web designing and building data visualizations with an understanding of the appropriate chart types to use to highlight patterns in the data; Proficiency in using Tableau, Power BI, Flourish and/or data visualization tools;
• A generalist with working knowledge of data visualization libraries and packages used today: Python (Seaborn, Bokeh, Kepler.gl), R (ggplot2, r2d3) and JavaScript (D3.js, Vega, Plotly) etc.;
• Fluency with a Git/Github version control workflow
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently and have strong problem-solving skill to take initiative and make decisions.
• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and a logical thinker with an ability to juggle with multiple priorities and maintain the quality of work within a fast-paced work environment.
• Ability and willingness to travel when needed
• Legally able to work in Indonesia;

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency in web fundamentals: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Proficiency in JavaScript framework such as Vue or React to develop interactive web dashboard

1. Collecting data using crawling methods in the media realm
2. Interactive data visualization in a modern web environment
3. Wireframe to deliver the data visualization concepts
4. Static visualization such as infographic to highlight the key findings on our web dashboard

Duration
This position is expected to start immediately for a contract period up to 31 December 2024.

Terms of Payment
Daily rate-based consultant with maximum of 18 (eighteen) working days per month

Contract Arrangement

Individual consultancy contract (Part-time, limited term)
