JOB DETAIL

This consultancy is offered to complete the delivery of Result Area 3.3 of TRUEFISH: True Fish Farming Story in the Lake Victoria Basin. Specifically, the consultant will deliver on the following:

  • Provide science-based recommendations and model national policies, regulations, and guidelines for the management of risks to biodiversity for adoption at the regional level.
  • Provide recommendations on the development of the genetic management plans and produce guidelines on how they will feed into the East African Community (EAC) Regional Biodiversity Strategy for aquaculture.

Scope of Work

The consultant will be expected to conduct the following:

  1. Review of biodiversity conservation plans and genetic management plans and guidelines, adapted for aquaculture resource management.
  2. Develop science-based recommendations drawing on relevant publications (e.g. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8655616/) for model national policies, regulations and guidelines for the management of tilapia resources in Lake Victoria Basin.
  3. Develop recommendations for a genetic management plan, and guidelines, for adoption in the EAC Regional Biodiversity Strategy for aquaculture.
  4. Virtually present the two sets of recommendations to the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) Regional Working Group on Fish Genetics, Breeding and Biodiversity Management in Aquaculture for review and adoption.

Requirements

  • Ability to review and interpret scientific outputs and develop science-based recommendations for biodiversity conservation and management.
  • Ability to write and present reports to a strategic audience.
  • Able to conduct virtual consultations with strategic stakeholders.
  • Specific knowledge on biodiversity management with respect to aquaculture will be an advantage.
  • Experiences of working in the Lake Victoria region, especially in Kenya, Tanzania and/or Uganda will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of genetic management protocols, including the Nagoya Protocol on Access Benefit and Sharing, will be an added advantage.

Reporting

The agency will report the progress of the assignment to WorldFish on Monthly basis.

Budget

Interested Consultant (s) are requested to provide a detailed budget proposal outlining professional fees, travel expenses (if applicable), and any other costs related to the consultancy. The budget should be submitted along with the application.

Evaluation and Selection

Applications will be evaluated based on the qualifications and experience of the consultant, the quality and feasibility of the proposed approach and work plan, the relevance of previous work examples and the most competitive proposal. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview or request additional information before final selection. This opportunity is open for all applicants.
