The Alliance is part of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future.
About the position
Evaluating Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS) requires understanding the socio-economic diversity of farmers and consumers and the agro-climatic variety of growing environments. Current approaches often struggle with scaling participation and generating robust, externally valid data. To address this, the BOLDER project will implement a multi-stakeholder network using the tricot approach, a data-driven method validated in the Global South. Tricot, powered by the ClimMob platform (https://climmob.net ), scales the evaluation of NUS crops by engaging farmers and consumers in decentralized trials, generating actionable data on technology performance and preferences. This project aims to expand the use of tricot in Africa, integrating NUS with existing staple crop efforts.
Reporting to Scientist I, Digital Inclusion, the consultant will develop and deliver Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for on-farm and consumer evaluation of NUS, ensuring robust and scalable methodologies are documented and accessible.
Responsibilities
  • Develop at least one SOP per crop for on-farm and/or consumer evaluation, including:
    • Recommendations for trial implementation (plot size, number of seeds, tool to select optimum number of participants).
    • Evaluation of guidelines for different crop stages and traits to evaluate at each stage.
    • Data linkage recommendations to Crop Ontologies.
    • Make SOPs available at least in two languages (English, French and preferably Portuguese and Swahili).
  • Ensure SOPs are available online with a DOI link.
  • Incorporate SOPs as a chapter in the tricot user manual.
  • Create a trial template for ClimMob.
  • Analyze tricot data collected with ClimMob, in collaboration with our partners at WorldVeg.
  • Contribute to scientific publications.

Requirements

Essential Requirements
  • PhD in Agriculture, Plant Science, Agronomy, or related field.
  • Proven experience in developing SOPs and conducting agricultural trials.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills.
  • Proficiency in using R for data analysis.
  • Fluency in both written and oral English is essential.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
