Duties and Responsibilities
Guided by the Inter-Secretariat Working Group on Household Surveys (ISWGHS), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is initiating a project to revise its series of UN methodological publications on household surveys. Most of these publications of the previous handbooks were produced between the 1980s and the 1990s, with more recent additions in 2005 and 2008. The revised handbook will be serve as an essential guide to assist countries in planning and implementing household surveys using the latest technological development and statistical techniques. The revision of the Handbook is mandated by the UN Statistical Commission at its 55th session in 2024 (decision 55/117). Aspects to be included in the revised handbook and how the handbook will be prepared are guided by national statistical offices through rounds of consultations. Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Inter-Secretariat Working Group on Household Surveys, the Technical Editor Consultant and the Handbook Revision Steering Committee Members, the copywriter will be responsible for the end-to-end writing of the data collection chapter of the revised household survey handbook, ensuring that the latest relevant resources and analytical tools are included in the chapter. The copywriter will also lead the writing with co-authors of the data collection chapter, reviewers and other development partners to improve the draft and incorporate their feedback, and whenever needed carry out the following tasks: • Produce high-quality written products in short, medium or long format that target stakeholders on various topical issues pertaining to the data collection chapter. • Guide on the research and literature review to identify innovative approaches that are related to the use of new data sources and integration of surveys with other data sources in terms of data collection. • Review and polish the data collection chapter draft to enhance conciseness and readability. • Provide technical feedback on relevant research documents prepared by different co-authors of the data collection chapter. • Contributes to the revision of methodological guidelines and tools. • Guide on the preparation of technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings. • Contributes to drafting relevant reports for the data collection chapter. • Liaises with relevant stakeholders and the wider community to remain up to date on innovations, to carry out household surveys and to amplify the impact of the revised handbook through the data collection chapter. • Substantively contributes to seminars, working groups, and expert meetings. • Prepare presentation materials and present key findings. • Provides technical guidance on the draft of data collection programs, country practices and other related information. • Other ad-hoc and related tasks that may be assigned by the ISWGHS coordinator.
Qualifications/special skills
Master or equivalent in statistics, mathematics, economics or social science and relevant fields is required. Minimum ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in statistics, social sciences, economics, or a related field is required. Five years of experience in survey methodologies and drafting survey publications is required. Five years of experience working with National Statistical Offices and liaising with regional and international partners is required. Experience drafting UN documents
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required
