OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

The Communication and Information Sector’s mission is to promote freedom of expression, media development and media literate societies, and to build knowledge societies through fostering universal access to information, innovation for sustainable development and the preservation of documentary heritage. (The role of this vacant position does not include responsibility for UNESCO’s wider external communications, which is managed by the Division for Communications and Public Engagement).

Work assignment:

Under the overall authority of the Head of Unit for Media and Information Literacy and Digital competencies, the Individual Specialist shall provide his/her expertise to support the implementation, launch and dissemination of new resources on Media and Information Literacy at global level, in particular targeting digital platforms and its users. The Individual Specialist should also provide his/her expertise to ensure the implementation and reporting of the communication strategy of the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) unit, in consultation with CI/EO’s Communication Officer.

Long Description

In particular, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

  1. Support the development and dissemination of new UNESCO resources and tools on MIL, in particular with the purpose of tackling online harmful content (hate speech and disinformation).
  2. Identify opportunities; draft proposals and reports setting out plans for engaging digital platforms and content creators on MIL in the activities and events of the Unit.
  3. Engage and liaise with digital platforms and content creators on joint collaborations with the Unit.
  4. Analyze current social media trends and accounts on Media and Information Literacy and provide inputs and recommendations to support the work of the Unit and ensure its visibility on social media.
  5. Support the Unit’s visibility by developing communication materials, writing articles, messages for social media.
  6. Ensure the MIL webpage is up-to-date, and content is coordinated and shared with colleagues to ensure information exchange.
  7. Provide any other support to consultations, events, meetings, missions organized by the Unit.
  8. Support the MIL unit in any other tasks that may be needed.

Long Description

Deliverables:

  1. Monthly visibility reports of the Unit.
  2. Contribute to the revised communication strategy for the MIL Unit.
  3. Reports on MIL campaigns, activities and events with digital platforms and content creators.
  4. Detailed list of content creators to engage with the Unit.
  5. Analysis of current social media trends and accounts on MIL.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in journalism, political sciences, management, or in related fields of social and human sciences.

Work Experience

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in communication and information and/or promoting freedom of expression with digital platforms.

Part 2: Financial Proposal

A competitive fee for the assignment, which should be quoted in EUR (or USD) and expressed on a monthly basis (with maximum of 5000 EUR per month) – the overall cost of the assignment, expressed as an overall lump-sum.

Additional Information:

  • The selected candidate will work at UNESCO’s HQ.
  • This Consultant Contract is for a period of 9 months.
  • Estimated contract dates from 15 March to 15 December 2024.
