Background:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is performing a comprehensive analysis of migration drivers in Central America, following a structural modeling approach. Part of this work includes quantitative studies examining the role of distortions in agricultural markets on migration decisions and aggregate productivity, as well as the role of development policies on migration and local welfare. IFPRI seeks a consultant to collaborate in these studies performing specific theoretical modeling, data processing and model calibrations; simulations and statistical analysis; and report drafting. The position is based remotely and may require travel to Central America or IFPRI headquarters in Washington, DC.

 

Scope of Work:

  • Revise and expand a base theoretical framework for quantitative analysis.
  • Perform data compilation and processing for model calibration.
  • Perform simulation and statistical analysis with input from IFPRI team as needed.
  • Draft reports of theoretical and quantitative analyses performed.

Deliverables:

  • Extension of a theoretical model
  • Data compilation and model calibration
  • Model simulations

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Economics or closely related field.
  • Excellent theoretical skills in economic and structural modeling.
  • Excellent skills in structural model calibration and simulations.
  • Sound knowledge of Matlab.
  • Experience with quantitative research methods and statistical analysis of aggregate and micro data.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work independently and with initiative, and with colleagues from diverse cultures.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
  • Sound knowledge of macroeconomics and microeconomics.
  • Knowledge of STATA.
  • Research experience in Central America on development and migration issues.
