Background

Harnessing Gender and Social Equality for Resilience in Agri-food Systems (HER+) is a three-year research initiative that conducts innovative gender and social science research to make progress on climate resilience for women. In collaboration with partners, HER+ delivers direct outcomes that strengthen women’s climate resilience in the countries where we work. We pursue one central research question: What innovations can overcome restrictive social norms, promote women’s access to technologies and resources, and ensure policies and governance bolster gender and social equality in climate-resilient food systems? Through its investigations, HER+ delivers strategic analysis and evidence that can inform future research on gender equality, social inclusion, and climate resilience.

The Project

The Bundles Innovations for Women’s Empowerment work package (WP 2), co-led by the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT (ABC), is meant to design and collect systematic evidence on whether and how STIBs (Socio-Technical Innovative Bundles) can enhance women’s empowerment and resilience to later design and implement context-specific and gender responsive STIBs. We intend to build on available and relevant CGIAR and non-CGIAR innovations through learning labs to enhance their uptake and impacts via enhancing women’s access, resilience, and empowerment.

Main Responsibilities:

Two Consultants, one in Kenya and another in Ethiopia will be responsible for undertaking project activities of HER+ in Africa. The consultants will work under the supervision of the project lead and collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of project activities. The scope of work includes, but is not limited to:
  • Assist in the development of quantitative and qualitative data collection tools.
  • Support the training of enumerators for multiple data collection and assist in data collection exercises.
  • Engage private and public sector stakeholders and farmers in the learning lab sites.
  • Visit farmers and organizations participating in learning labs to assess the performance of STIBs in the life cycle of the project.
  • Check the consistency of incoming digital data.
  • Build capacity of stakeholders on gender mainstreaming
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis.
  • Support partner engagements and collaborations with other initiatives at the grassroots level.
  • Draft technical reports, guides, working papers and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Support activities of other projects/initiatives activities as assigned by the work package lead in Africa.
  • Will work closely with country focal initiative persons.

 

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Anthropology, Sociology, Agricultural economics, or related fields).
  • Experience in research projects related to gender, social inclusion, and climate resilience.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in quantitative and qualitative data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and local languages in Kenya and Ethiopia.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including farmers, organizations, and government representatives.
  • Willingness to travel within Kenya and Ethiopia for fieldwork.

Duration of the Assignment

The assignment will be for a period of 8 months. The consultant will be assessed after three months with the possibility of extension based on performance and project requirements.

Reporting

The Consultant will report directly to the initiative lead but work closely with the country focal initiative persons. They will be expected to submit regular progress reports, as well as any other reports or deliverables as required by the initiatives and other projects.
