1. BACKGROUND
This position is based in the Section on Educational Innovations and Skills Development (EISD) at the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Bangkok. The EISD Section is one of the two education sections of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Bangkok that aims to enhance UNESCO Member States’ capacity to enable educational innovations and skills development for all in the Asia-Pacific region. EISD is responsible for several programme areas, namely (i) Lifelong Learning (ii) Technical and Vocational Education (iii) Higher Education (iv) Education for Sustainable Development (v) Global Citizenship Education (vi) Educational Research and Foresight and (vii) ICT in Education amongst other areas. Utilizing research and foresight, the EISD Education team promotes educational innovations and skills development for learners of diverse background through various approaches in formal and non-formal settings. In line with UNESCO’s global strategy, EISD emphasizes gender mainstreaming in all of its programmes.
Within the framework of the Section for Educational Innovation and Skills Development programme of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Bangkok, key priority activities focusing on SDG Target 4.7 include: (a) Completion of Regional GCED network activities 2023; (b) Planning for Regional GCED network activities for 2024 ; (c) Curriculum review to mainstream ESD and GCED; (d) Implementing the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) at regional level (f) Preparation of news articles and website materials for activities pertaining to SDG 4.7.
Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Bangkok, the guidance of the Chief of Section for Educational Innovation and Skills Development (EISD) and direct supervision of Faryal Khan, Programme Specialist, ESD, GCED, Research and Foresight of UNESCO Bangkok, the consultant is expected to undertake the following work.
2. Work Assignment and timeline
Contribute to informed policy, strategies, and capacity development for SDG 4.7, with specific focus on GCED, by preparing and finalizing a series of conference materials including invitation letters, synopsis, concept notes, articles, reports, communication packages, and other documents for activities pertaining to regional and sub-regional meetings/trainings on SDG 4.7. – Provide support to prepare for curriculum review in selected Member States in collaboration with UNESCO institutes, field offices and partners with specific focus on mainstreaming GCED and ESD. – Provide support to Greening Education Partnership activities in the Asia-Pacific region.
The work involves undertaking the following tasks:
a. Coordinate and hold the follow-up Workshop on GCED ‘Taking it Local’ through preparing relevant materials, talking points, communications with participants, and an article to announce the workshop for UNESCO Bangkok website by 16 October 2023.
b. Prepare the concept note, agenda and invitations, communications with network and media, coordinate and hold the GCED Asia-Pacific Network Annual Meeting (to be held by 7 November 2023) by 1 November 2023 and a report outlining the outcomes of the meeting by 25 November 2023.
c. Organise and hold the GCED Network Member led ‘GCED capacity building and social entrepreneurship skills workshop for youth’ by preparing a concept note, agenda, communications with network and media, by 15 November 2023 and a report outlining the outcomes of the workshop by 25 November 2023.
d. Organise and hold the GCED Network Members led knowledge exchange webinar by preparing a concept note, agenda, communications with network and media, by 20 November 2023 and a report outlining the outcomes of the meeting by 1 December 2023.
e. Prepare a narrative annual report for APCEIU to outline the results of the GCED activities planned in 2023 by 10 December 2023.
f. Support the Greening Education Partnership (GEP) in Asia; build partnerships and potential activities. Submit a report on the progress of GEP by 15 December 2023.
g. Prepare a proposal and strategic plan for GCED activities 2024 by 25 January 2024.
h. Prepare 3 concept notes for GCED activities 2024 by 25 February 2024.
All drafts must be in line with UNESCO’s style guide (https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000141812). The consultant must provide of all references to data and other relevant material/resources used for argument presented as footnotes including links to the resources where possible. In line with UNESCO’s overall gender mainstreaming strategy, the individual specialist is expected to integrate a gender perspective in all activities and apply gender analysis and mainstreaming concepts whenever feasible. The work shall be completed by 1 March 2024 at the latest.

Education
University Degree (Masters) in the field of education, social sciences, public policy or related areas.

Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English.
Previous experience with international organization, preferably the United Nations, would be preferable.
