Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 2, “Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection”. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

Organizational Context: The Consultant will be based in the Programme Coordination Group, Office of the Deputy Director for Nuclear Sciences and Applications and will work under the supervision of the Departmental Programme Coordinator.

Main Purpose

 

The purpose of this consultancy is to provide technical input and expertise in the preparation and implementation of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Programme that will take place on November 12-14, 2024. The objective of the Conference is to raise awareness of the role of nuclear sciences and applications in various fields such as human health, environment, water resources, food and agriculture and industrial applications as well as on the support provided by the IAEA through, among others, its Technical Cooperation Programme.

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Provide technical input in the development of the agenda for the Conference, attend meetings of the Conference Committee and other meetings as relevant and maintain an up to date list of requests received from internal stakeholders and Member States;
  • Prepare  materials for the Ministerial Conference;
  • Provide technical input and proposals on events that could be organized in the margins of the Conference with relevant partners;
  • Provide technical input to the Programme Coordination Group in liaising with internal stakeholders with regards to participants and/or Permanent Missions;
  • Prepare, after the Ministerial Conference, a report on the lessons learnt from its preparation and implementation and recommendations for future Ministerial Conferences;
  • Provide technical expertise and inputs on any other activity related to the Ministerial Conference as required. 

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Public Administration, Education, Communication, Project Management, International Relations or similar.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in the area of strategic planning.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.
  • Working knowledge of at least one additional official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese and/or Russian) and experience in science diplomacy are advantage.

Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 250, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
