Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 2, “Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection”. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Consultant would be based in the Office of the Deputy Director for Nuclear Sciences and Applications and would work very closely with    related members of DDG-NA’s team both in Vienna and Seibersdorf.

Main Purpose

 

The purpose of this consultancy is to provide technical expertise in the development of new outreach approaches to reach key and new stakeholders on the peaceful uses of nuclear applications with a particular focus on the activities of the IAEA’s Nuclear Application Laboratories.  This work will help the Department to take full advantage of upcoming opportunities (i.e., the August 2023 NPT PrepCom Side Event, the 67th General Conference, etc.) to raise awareness about the benefits from the peaceful uses of nuclear applications and highlight expanded opportunities that are emerging as a result of significantly enhanced capacities of the 8 NA Laboratories in Seibersdorf built under the Renovation of the Nuclear Applications Laboratories (ReNuAL) initiative. Efforts will be made to emphasis the opportunities for stakeholders to partner with the IAEA in areas such as capacity-building, applied research and technical services and of particular relevance to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Activities

 

Key activities will include:

• Provide technical expertise in the development of approaches and plans for reaching specific target audiences (e.g., the NPT PrepCom , 67th GC, specialized events and specific potential partners etc.) and for raising awareness about the IAEA’s services and opportunities to cooperate;
• Develop informational materials, displays, stands etc. for use at the upcoming events mentioned above and other special events in 2023;
• Provide technical input in development of information that would assist stakeholders in identifying applications that would be of use in addressing their specific development challenges;
• Prepare a roadmap outlining next steps in developing coordinated approaches/ information about the delivery of key services, e.g., training and capacity building, technical services etc.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Public Administration, Education, Communication, Project Management, International Relations or similar.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in the area of strategic planning.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Working knowledge of other UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, and/or Russian) is an asset.

 

Remuneration

The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 250, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
