Description

Ground Segment System Engineer in charge of Flexible, Digital and Sustainable (FDS) CSG activities at the European Spaceport, Infrastructure Office, Launch Range Operations and Representation at CSG , Infrastructure and Value Chain, Directorate of Space Transportation.

ESA contributes to the funding of the Guiana Space Centre (“CSG Programme”): in the Space Transportation Directorate, Launch Range Operations and Representation at CSG (STS-IR) is, in particular, responsible for the maintenance, renovation and modernisation of the spaceport. Further enhancements towards a more Flexible, more Digital and more Sustainable/carbon neutral Europe’s Spaceport (FDS activities) were recently adopted by the Council meeting at ministerial level held in November 2022 in Paris.

You will be responsible for a portfolio of ground segment activities to further enhance the CSG range in the following areas:

a) Continued digital transformation, reaching today indispensable standards and enhancing user services thanks to the implementation of an up-to-date environment and up-to-date digital technologies ;
b) Modernisation and adaptation of EPCUs;
c) Carbon neutrality/creating a more sustainable space centre.

Duties

You will report to the Head of the European Spaceport Infrastructure Office within Launch Range Operations and Representation at CSG. Within the framework of the ESA/CNES contract for the CSG range, you will be in charge of:

  • follow-up, with CNES team(s), of the implementation of FDS(*) enhancement projects:
    • digitalisation projects following the introduction of CSG range SNT (digital transversal infrastructure) middleware;
    • modernisation of EPCUs (payload processing facilities);
    • greening activities in accordance with the CSG Energy transformation roadmap;
  • monitoring, as relevant, FDS project interfaces with other range or launcher parallel activities, participating in related configuration management boards; ensuring an “overall IT governance”; participation in project reviews/key points/maturity gates, working groups, and progress meetings with key launch base partners;
  • implementation of project management framework (cost, risks, delay , key/success indicators); project methodology consolidation (Agile/scrum framework, V-cycle, integrated logistics support) as relevant;
  • participating in some FDS CNES-led procurement processes, supporting proactively the concrete implementation of ESA industrial policy requirements;
  • monitoring the implementation of asset management policy for ESA assets, accepting the inclusion of FDS assets in the database of ESA-owned assets;
  • preparing regular reports as well as recommending steps to be taken; contributing to the progress status reports to the Space Transportation Programme Board.

Education

A Master’s degree in an engineering discipline is required for this post with experience in the space sector, preferably in project implementation/system engineering.

Additional requirements

You should have also the following skills

• an ability to anticipate difficulties, to each solution oriented/pragmatic/timely decisions;
• the ability to be a proactive team player.

Good knowledge of the CSG (Europe’s spaceport), its infrastructures (e.g. payload preparation operations), will be important assets.

Good knowledge of greening/sustainable infrastructures in particular the CSG greening roadmap will be an asset.

Excellent ability to conduct exchanges at a professional level in the French language.
