This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days/month in the office. You can be based in our office in Washington DC, London or The Hague. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

 

About the Program:

 

Land & Carbon Lab is World Resources Institute’s premier hub for geospatial data, analysis, and monitoring of the world’s land and its natural ecosystems. We develop breakthroughs in geospatial monitoring to help governments, businesses and communities power solutions for sustainable landscapes worldwide.

 

Land & Carbon Lab has three main offers:

 

  • Data innovation: Land & Carbon Lab partners with leading scientists and technologists to harness the power of artificial intelligence and geospatial monitoring to build cutting edge, open access monitoring systems for the world’s land and its nature-based carbon. By synthesizing troves of satellite data, we’ll provide decision makers with actionable information and insights to restore degraded landscapes, protect forests and nature, and produce land-intensive commodities more sustainably.
  • Insights and analysis: We analyze geospatial data to generate independent insights about the changing state of the world’s land, and how more sustainable landscapes can help us achieve this decade’s climate, nature and sustainable development goals.
  • Impact and partnerships: We’re partnering with diverse organizations to create real world impact, from corporate leaders and policymakers to Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

 

Job Highlight:

 

Reporting totheDirector of Impact at the Land and Carbon Lab,you will workwith Land & Carbon Lab communications staff and research and data experts to help produce analyses and to develop public facing content targeting a variety of audiences Land & Carbon Lab’s latest data innovations and findings.You will support the execution of Land & Carbon Lab’s communication, marketing, and impact strategies by turning data and research into actionable insights and other content that supports data users, decision makers, and practitioners.

 

What will you do:

 

Data analysis, visualization, and innovation with AI tools (65%):

 

  • Analyze maps, satellite imagery, and other quantitative data to identify findings and insights relevant to key audiences
  • Develop compelling visualizations, including maps, graphs, and gifs, interpreting geospatial data and findings for use in social media and other communications channels
  • Help explore possibilities for using AI to automate data analysis, with the goal of producing a regular cadence of visual insights for social media

 

Research engagement to develop editorial content (35%):

 

  • Engage with LCL research leads, such as through interviews and literature reviews, to turn their insights into compelling written and visual communications.
  • Draft blogs, news articles, and other public-facing written content that communicates insights to non-technical audiences around data innovations, methodologies, and research findings
  • Support editorial strategist and communications manager in identifying other opportunities to communicate around Land & Carbon Lab’s data innovation and analyses

 

What will you need:

 

  • Education: You have completed a bachelor’s degree (preferably a M.S. or PhD) in a related including remote sensing, geography, environmental science, landscape ecology and related fields
  • Experience: You have a minimum of 7 years of professional experience writing code for geospatial visuals and applications
  • Experience in visually interpreting satellite and geospatial data to come to conclusions about landscape dynamics
  • Experience working with subject matter experts and data scientists
  • Experience delivering quality drafts and deliverables promptly
  • Demonstrated ability creating data visualization and compelling maps
  • Experience writing blogs, news, or other long-form written communications on science/technical topics
  • Ability to produce compelling maps and other visualizations based on GIS/remote sensing data using GIS and data visualization technology
  • Ability to interpret and draw insights from quantitative data, maps, and satellite imagery.
  • Ability to work with large language models, advanced prompt engineering and generative AI APIs
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to produce drafts of blogs, news articles, and other written content that translate technical information for non-technical audiences and follow science communications best practices.
  • Knowledge in at least one of the following areas, and strong interest and ability to learn about others: land cover and land use change dynamics, cropland and pastureland dynamics, forest change dynamics, land- and forest-based GHG dynamics, agricultural commodity supply chains.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms
  • Employs collaborative and consultative approaches to research and content development
  • Curiosity, creativity, strong listening skills, and strong interest to gain expertise in topics related to ecosystem conservation and land and carbon monitoring.
  • Languages: English required. Expertise in other languages including French, Spanish, Portuguese or Bahasa Indonesian is desirable but not required
  • Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position is based. WRI is unable to authorize visa work authorization

 

Potential Salary: US salary range is between 96K and 110K USD. UK: 53K – 67K GBP. Netherlands: 67K – 84K EUR. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
