The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. The Center for Strategic and International Studies’ International Security Program (ISP) seeks a highly motivated Associate Fellow or Fellow to play a key role in advancing the program’s research on how artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) shapes the future of warfare, strategic competition, and great power competition.
The Associate Fellow or Fellow will be responsible for developing and leading in-depth research projects that aim to shape key policy debates and inform both public and private organizations. The individual will be expected to author or co-author policy and research reports in internal and external publications, as well as to develop and deliver research briefings and presentations to key stakeholders.

The Associate Fellow or Fellow will also lead crisis simulations or wargames and conduct quantitative and qualitative data analyses of results.
Ideal candidates will have experience in research and policy development at the intersection of technology and defense policy. Candidates should have a background in one of the following disciplines: statistics, data analytics, data science, or AI/ML. Experience with a one or more coding languages required (i.e., R or Python).

The salary for this position is between $80,000-$100,000 commensurate with experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Independently develop and conduct research projects with minimal oversight from a senior fellow.
• Contribute to research and analysis for ongoing research with government and non-government clients with a senior fellow.
• Write and publish reports, commentaries, and op-eds to promote research.
• Perform quantitative data analysis, build machine learning models, and report results to diverse audiences.
• Provide technical and policy expertise on AI/ML to diverse set of stakeholders, including government and non-government clients.
• Lead tabletop exercises, working groups, and client meetings in conjunction with a senior fellow.
• Independently identify potential grant projects, research potential funders, and develop research proposals to government and non-government clients.
• Work with and mentor two interns, providing them guidance over their research and quantitative data analysis.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience working in technology or national security.
• Masters or PhD candidate in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning, international relations, or another related field.
• Ability to conduct quantitative research and employ machine learning models to analyze large datasets.
• Experience securing funding from government or non-government donors and grants management.
• Experience conducting independent research, writing 10-30 page reports, and publishing in academic journals, national media, or professional publications.
• Project management experience with proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
