Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Please visit our website at www.eclac.org for further information. The internship is offered on an in-person full time basis. The internship in the Economic Development Unit of the Subregional Headquarters of ECLAC in Mexico will last 6 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected on an “as-needed” basis throughout the posting period. Under the supervision or overall guidance of the project lead, the intern is expected to undertake the following activities: The intern will create a code in the R program to automate any of the multiple databases generated by the Unit. Tasks will include: 1) Identify the most relevant data from the countries and the official source for the subregion. 2) Propose a work plan for the management and automation of information. 3) Create a code for the automation of information. 4) Process the data and aggregate it to facilitate economic analysis.

Qualifications/special skills

The basic education required is an HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). -No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. -Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. -Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. knowledge of standard software applications, especially R is required. Ability to create codes to automate information is required.

Languages

Spanish is required, since the databases are in this language. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
