The Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an experienced DEI Learning & Engagement Lead to strengthen the recently established DEI team. Reporting to the Global Head of DEI, this position will play a critical role in developing the internal training and engagement infrastructure to build staff and manager capacity to be active partners in our DEI journey. This position will work closely with the DEI Office, the Senior Manager for Learning & Development on the Global Human Resources (HR) team and other relevant colleagues, and external consultants to design and implement formal and informal in-person and virtual DEI programming. This position will also work on other staff engagement initiatives, such as partnering with the HR team on engagement and culture surveys, serving as a point of contact for DEI questions from staff and managers, supporting the DEI Task Force, staff communities (ERGs), and other staff DEI engagement bodies, and contributing to internal DEI-related communications. Initial projects this position will work on include a foundational course for all staff, a deep dive curriculum for individual contributors and one for people managers, and several informal learning opportunities.
The successful candidate must have a track record of strategically and successfully building a holistic and effective DEI learning and engagement culture in global settings that is highly supportive of, and collaborative with, staff and managers across the organization. They are a strong and empathetic facilitator with a global mindset who is skilled at creating constructive learning spaces for individual contributors and leaders alike. Given the new DEI phase HRW is embarking on, the successful candidate needs to be comfortable with building from scratch, be creative and resourceful, have the ability to navigate change, and demonstrate a willingness to contribute to building an inclusive and effective DEI team.
The initial duration of this fixed-term appointment is two years and is intended to be full-time, although we are open to considering a part-time arrangement (a minimum of 24 hours a week). This position will be based in one of HRW’s offices. Candidates with experience working in the global south are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate may have the opportunity to work remotely. We aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.
Responsibilities:
1. Partner with the Head of DEI and HR team on designing and implementing a comprehensive DEI Learning and Engagement Strategy to advance the overall organizational strategy and achieve sustainable results
2. Design, develop, and implement trainings, tools, and assessments for staff and managers in partnership with the Head of DEI, DEI & HR Senior Officer on the DEI Team, Learning & Development Senior Manager on the HR team, and external vendors.
3. Facilitate and co-facilitate staff and manager training, dialogue sessions, learning spaces, and informal engagement initiatives;
4. Provide subject matter expertise on specific DEI related topics, such as particular identity dimensions (race/ethnicity, gender, disability, LGBT, religion, etc.), intersectionality, unconscious bias, global agility, micro-behaviors, inclusive leadership, empathy, and cross-cultural communication;
5. Partner closely with thematic subject matter experts in programmatic teams (e.g. LGBT rights, women’s rights, disability rights, refugee and migrant rights) to ensure our internal trainings and resources are aligned with our programmatic work
6. Maintain and expand the DEI SharePoint page with resources and other relevant DEI information and promote the effective use of them;
7. Support and collaborate with the organization’s internal DEI Taskforce and other existing staff groups, including supporting the establishment of employee resource groups or potential other DEI-related employee networks;
8. Be a point of contact for staff and managers on DEI related issues related to DEI-related interactions, team culture, training, facilitation, and resources;
9. Contribute to internal DEI-related communications as needed in collaboration with the Internal Communications Strategist;
10. Contribute to strengthening the DEI function in the organization and cultivating an effective and inclusive DEI Team;
11. Operate in alignment with organizational values and compliance with organizational policies and protocols; and
12. Perform other responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:
We are eager to hear from candidates who can perform the essential functions of this role even if they do not meet all of our desired qualifications – particularly if they are from backgrounds underrepresented in this sector.
Education: A level of education that when combined with your professional experience will adequately show you have the capability to contribute meaningfully to HRW’s DEI efforts. Candidates with demonstrated education and training in diversity, equity & inclusion, instructional design, professional development, leadership development, and facilitation strongly preferred.
Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience, particularly in DEI management, learning & development and facilitation is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Deep understanding of global and regional DEI practices, challenges, opportunities, and learning and engagement methods is required.
2. Experience working with (virtual) learning platforms (including Learning Management Systems, especially Cornerstone), instructional design tools, learning impact evaluations, employee engagement and culture assessments practices, and managing external vendors is required.
3. Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff within the organization is required.
4. Ability to independently execute complex projects with minimal guidance is required.
5. Solid judgment, discretion, and critical thinking skills are required. Ability to maintain confidentiality and to think proactively and holistically is required.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required. Proficiency in another language, such as French, Arabic, or Spanish is desirable.
7. Strong computer knowledge including Windows and MS Office applications is required.
8. A global mindset and a commitment to HRW’s mission and human rights values is required.
Other: Candidates must possess valid work authorization for the location in which they will be based; we are unable to provide work visa sponsorship for this role.
Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers comprehensive compensation and benefits. If based in the United States, the salary range for this position will be USD 102,00 – 112,000. Salary ranges outside of the United States vary based on location.
