Org. Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Content Services Unit, Meetings Support Section, Meetings and Publishing Division, of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The Content Services Unit provides publishing services and plays an active role in producing United Nations documentation and publications in multiple and accessible ways through print and digital publishing methods. Its team consists of production editors, desktop publishers, graphic designers and printers. The incumbent reports to the Team Lead of the Desktop Publishing Team.
Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Desktop Publishing Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Produces design elements for documents and publications intended for multi-channel publishing, including visual identity, graphics and templates, ensuring that the final version conforms to UN style and typographic standards. • Using appropriate desktop publishing software, (a) formats and finalizes verbatim records, and (b) designs, lays out (text, tables, graphics and images), formats and finalizes publications. • Checks files out and into the publishing system database. • Ensures that all design elements have been incorporated accurately and alerts responsible verbatim reporter/verbatim reviser or proofreader/production editor whenever errors or discrepancies are found. • Provides training, guidance and support to temporary and junior staff in the processing of basic and more complex documents. • Depending on the needs of the service, availability for overtime is expected. • Performs other related work as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. Specialized technical studies in graphic design with a diploma or certificate are desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the field of desktop publishing and/or graphic design is required. Advanced knowledge of Adobe InDesign is required. Experience with publication practices within the United Nations system or similar international organisation is desirable. Experience in multichannel publishing and/or content or workflow management tools is desirable. Experience in proofreading is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise, which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
