The incumbent is responsible to produce ESCWA parliamentary and related documentation and publication in both Arabic and English following UN standards within the strict deadlines; to service ESCWA meetings and conferences held at the duty station and outside in editorial; and desktop publishing and to explore and propose new work methods in desktop publishing and content management.

Duties and Responsibilities
This position is located within the Conference Management Section (CMS), Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The desktop publishing assistant will report directly to a senior desktop publishing assistant and the overall guidance of Chief CMS. The IC is required to undertake the following tasks: • Creates and formats various types of documents, such as publications, brochures, and more. • Participates, as member of a team, in the production of parliamentary and related documentation and publications. • Uses the corporate logo and templates and custom-designed PowerPoint layouts. • Imports and formats copy and graphics into design templates. • Designs graphics for traditional and online content, social media, ePub and promotions. • Proofreads final copy and edits contents and graphics using the United Nations Editorial Manual. • Performs proofreading functions to ensure that processing changes have been accurately incorporated, in consultation with the responsible person, as necessary, by checking successive versions of edited and translated documents against previous versions, as appropriate, including by checking the final version against the submitted original manuscript, in accordance with existing guidelines. • Performs formatting and layout including content input from multiple digital (PDF) or native files (word and Adobe Creative Suite). • Reviews and corrects files, loads fonts, inspects graphics, and finalizes content for production.
Qualifications/special skills
High School diploma or equivalent is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of nine years of experience in in desktop publishing, including computer skills, draft typing, proofreading and typographical layout of parliamentary documents and publications, or in related areas are required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
