Org. Setting and Reporting
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA unescwa.org) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 21 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. This position is located in the Conference Management Section (CMS), Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The incumbent reports to the Chief of CMS.
Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Desktop Publishing Team Leader will be responsible for the following duties: • Takes responsibility for and oversees the work of the team with respect to the timely production of official documentation, supplements and publications. • Screens documentation, supplements and publications submitted through the electronic workflow for production in order to ensure compliance with submission standards and regulations. • Oversees programming of work unit; distributes assignments, ensuring efficient and effective processing of documentation and an equitable distribution of work. • Performs administrative and coordination work, including the maintenance of daily statistics. • Supervises the staff by identifying and resolving issues, monitoring staff performance, participating in and overseeing staff training. Completes Performance Evaluations) for supervised staff. • Confers and collaborates with other units in order to maximize resources; this includes identifying statistical charts, diagrams and organigrams for utilization by other units. • Participates, as leader of the team, in the production of official documentation, supplements, and publications, by using digital publishing technologies in the appropriate language for production. • Incorporates changes as marked by reporters, revisers and other clients, ensuring that the final version of the document conforms to, as the case may be, (a) the draft translation as to contents, and/or (b) the original language manuscript as to format and typography, in accordance with existing editorial guidelines. • Performs necessary formatting/layout corrections to formatted materials, alerting the responsible authority if obvious errors or discrepancies are found in the translated text. • Coordinates with language staff in writing, editing, translation, design and production to monitor content through all stages of the publishing process ensuring that all changes have been incorporated in the Arabic, English and French versions of a document or publication; • Reviews texts submitted by editors, translators and revisers, correcting any errors or mistakes and preparing them for processing or for issuance as required; • Oversees the updating and daily maintenance of the network drives. • Maintains inventory of and responds to all requests for past outputs. • Assures smooth continuity with respect to consecutive work shifts. Prioritizes work to be continued and gives special instructions as needed. • Rotates in shifts, as well as weekend on-call duties, as needed. • Depending on the needs of the service, availability for overtime is expected. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other related work as required.

Work Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in digital publishing technologies, including draft typing, copy editing, proof-reading and typographical layout or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to eight (8) years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. At least three (3) years of experience in using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. At least three (3) years of experience in translation support is desirable. At least two (2) years of experience in text alignment using translation memory is desirable. At least one (1) year of experience in copy-preparation and text comparison is desirable. At least one (1) year of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required; and fluency in Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand).
